The two of them traded a few teasing words before Cecilia finally hung up.
It was almost time to get off work.
Cecilia had been about to call Charlotte and the others out to go shopping and grab something to eat, but before she could, Nathaniel pushed himself to his feet and came straight toward her.
"Ceci, work's over. We should head home."
His eyes were bright.
Over the past year, Nathaniel had practically planted himself in the Jamieson Group.
He had no intention of moving.
Cecilia looked thoroughly put out. "I want to go out for a while. You can head back first."
"Where do you want to go? I'll come with you," Nathaniel answered right away.
Cecilia had nothing to say to that.
He was always like this.
Even when she just wanted to go shopping with her friends for a while, he wouldn't let it happen.
"If you're there, they won't be comfortable, so forget it."
Nathaniel stepped closer and took her hand. "Whatever you girls want to buy, I'll pay for all of it."
There was nothing else for it. If Nathaniel wanted to stay by Cecilia's side every second, then he had to stay on the good side of her little circle of best friends.
Right then, Charlotte came over carrying a whole stack of dossiers. "Mr. Rainsworth, does your Imminence Corporation seriously have no work to do?"
Ever since coming back, she'd already seen for herself how Nathaniel stuck to Cecilia like glue.
She'd thought Sven was clingy enough, but Nathaniel was even worse. It was a wonder her boss could put up with him.
"Work can be left to the people under me," Nathaniel said. "I'm the boss, not some employee."
Charlotte choked on that.
Nathaniel caught that he'd said the wrong thing and added, "You're different. You and Ceci are friends."
Mr. Rainsworth was a little too blunt.
If she and Cecilia hadn't been that close, whatever came out of his mouth probably would've sounded even worse.
Blunt as he was, Nathaniel still knew better than to casually offend his wife's best friend.
"Come on. You girls go shopping, and I'll pay."
Still, there was no way Nathaniel could feel at ease letting Cecilia stay alone with them.
Charlotte turned him down. "Forget it. I'm heading back. I need to go home and play with my kid."
Now Charlotte had even brought her kid over with her.
