By the time Meredith got to the school, she was just about to ask a teacher to call Dahlia out.
Then, from a distance, she saw Dahlia standing in front of the classroom block.
Standing across from her was Cassandra.
Meredith's face changed on the spot.
She strode toward them fast.
"Dahlia."
Dahlia turned to look at her.
"Mom."
The second Cassandra heard her own daughter call another woman Mom, the look on her face twisted.
"Dahlia, I'm your mother. She doesn't share a drop of blood with you."
After so many years apart, Cassandra's face had gone waxy yellow.
She looked dried out and thin all over, and her eyes stayed locked on Meredith.
Meredith didn't back off in the slightest.
She pulled Dahlia over in front of herself.
"Cassandra, you were the one who threw Dahlia away back then. And now you think you can just take her back? You make it sound way too easy."
Dahlia spoke up then.
"I only have one mom. Her name is Meredith, and my last name is Meredith too. You should leave. Don't come looking for me again."
Hearing that from her daughter, Meredith stood there for a moment, the pressure in her chest finally loosening.
Cassandra's face turned even uglier. "You ungrateful little brat. If I'd known, I never should've given birth to you."
After all these years, she had finally gotten out.
But once she did, she found she had already fallen out of step with the world. No matter what she tried, she couldn't fit back into it. With no money to her name, every step had been hard, and that was why she had come looking for her daughter.
Dahlia didn't respond to a word of it.
She just said to Meredith, "Mom, let's go. Don't bother with this lunatic."
Meredith nodded.
Then she left with Dahlia.
The second Cassandra saw them moving, she lunged to stop the two of them from leaving.
But she barely got there before Meredith's bodyguard blocked her off.
Meredith took Dahlia into the car, but even after they got in, she couldn't settle. The worry stayed there the whole time.
She was scared Cassandra would hurt Dahlia.
"Mom, why don't we go overseas? Somewhere nobody knows us?" Dahlia said all at once.
