Resolute, Nathaniel stood his ground.
Cecilia sighed. "Really, you don't have to. How can I work with you here?"
"Then let me help with your workload. How about that?" Nathaniel pressed.
His earnest expression told her he meant every word, and she found herself speechless.
"Fine. Stay just for today," she finally yielded.
Nathaniel had staff deliver the rest of the company files.
Arnold hesitated; after all, Nathaniel was technically an outsider.
Cecilia told her, "It's all right. Nathaniel isn't about to plot for my estate."
First, Nathaniel's own firm rivaled hers in size.
Second, whatever they left would one day pass to their four sons anyway.
All four boys were Nathaniel's children, so motive was nil.
Besides, someone as proudly self-sufficient as Nathaniel would never covet a woman's assets.
Hearing her verdict, Arnold finally handed every file to Nathaniel.
Nathaniel told Cecilia, "Your new assistant isn't bad."
He liked that she hadn't surrendered the paperwork just because of his status but had checked with Cecilia first.
Cecilia smiled. "Right? Charlotte recommended her; they're classmates."
Her easy smile only made the knot in Nathaniel's chest tighten.
Two nights ago had been a nightmare, yet she still acted as if nothing had happened.
"Ceci."
"Mm? What's wrong?" she asked.
"Nothing. How about you rest today? Hand me everything and I'll handle it," Nathaniel offered.
Eyes on her computer, she shook her head. "I rested yesterday. The company's got a backlog that needs my decisions."
