Vivian deliberately teased Elliot, "Eli, how can you say that? Your mommy and I are like sisters. Don't you see on TV that parents have the final say in their children's marriage?"
She continued, "Don't worry; I didn't have a daughter this time, but I will try again to have a beautiful girl. Will you marry her then? You are such a good kid, so you will definitely treat her well, right?"
Elliot was easier to fool than Jonathan. He thought Vivian was really planning to try for a daughter, and he shivered involuntarily.
"Ms. Kennedy, I-I might not get married..." He was so scared that he didn't even want to get married.
Cecilia also joined in the teasing. "But didn't you say Dahlia was pretty before? You even said whoever could marry Dahlia would be very happy."
"Oh? Do you have someone you like?" Vivian pretended to be very surprised. "No wonder you don't want to marry my daughter."
A bloom of crimson climbed up Elliot's cheeks. "I-I don't..."
"Then wait for me to give birth to a daughter for you, and you are not allowed to bully her," Vivian said.
"Okay." Elliot accepted it in resignation.
Seeing the look of despair on his face, Vivian and Cecilia finally showed him mercy and stopped teasing him.
Zachary, who was off to the side, was deep in thought. I already have a son now, and I'd be the happiest person in the world if our second child is a girl. It means I'd have both a son and a daughter. Nathaniel only has sons, while Darren only has a daughter. Having both a son and a daughter would be a dream.
While he was daydreaming, Vivian and Cecilia started chatting.
"Ceci, how's Dahlia doing lately?" Vivian asked.
"She's doing great. Meredith is raising her well. She's plump and laughs more than before," Cecilia said.
Cecilia still remembered her first time seeing Dahlia—it was when Cassandra abandoned her in the hospital. Dahlia's eyes were dull, and she was so tiny, as if she knew her parents didn't love her.
But recently, when Cecilia met with Meredith and saw Dahlia, Dahlia could already say many words and played happily with Jonathan and Elliot. Her eyes were not as empty and helpless as they were before.
