Callum nodded.
Nathaniel released the boy's ear and gently patted his head.
"Callum, do you want Mommy and me to separate?"
Callum shook his head.
No way!
He had envied other kids whose parents attended school events together and dreamed of holding both his parents' hands at the same time.
"Good boy. To make sure we don't get a divorce, I have to make some sacrifices. Can you understand that?"
Callum pondered for a moment, piecing together Nathaniel's logic.
"So, you're pretending to be hurt to keep Mommy around and avoid divorce? And you think that makes it okay?"
"Yes," Nathaniel replied, raising an eyebrow.
However, Callum's face grew serious as he countered, "But Mommy doesn't seem to want anything to do with you. Is this really going to work?"
That comment hit a nerve.
Callum added, "Besides, Grandma Mildred says pretending to be sick isn't good behavior, and you said it's lying too. Wouldn't Mommy be even angrier if she found out?"
Nathaniel stayed silent, his face turning grim.
"Daddy, this plan is silly! It won't work at all!" Callum concluded.
Five minutes later, Mavis was walking down the hospital corridor with Nathaniel's medication when she heard Callum crying.
She quickened her pace and rushed to open the door.
Callum was sitting on Nathaniel's bed, wailing with tears streaming down his face.
In contrast, Nathaniel lounged casually against the headboard, arms folded, looking more like a spectator than a concerned father.
She examined Callum's arms for any signs of injury but found nothing.
Nathaniel scoffed. "You don't know him at all. He cries at the drop of a hat. He can squeeze out tears over anything."
He looked at Callum and added, "Crybabies aren't considered real men. People will make fun of you."
This only upset Callum more.
He flung himself into Mavis's arms, sobbing, "Daddy's so mean! He's the meanest! I don't like Daddy anymore!"
Mavis patted Callum's back, trying to comfort him.
She was really annoyed with Nathaniel and said, "If you can't comfort him, at least don't make things worse. How childish can you be?"
Nathaniel rubbed his forehead and replied, "I'm not the one who made him cry. It's not my job to comfort him. It's yours."
"Mine?" Mavis asked, baffled.
