Mavis was bewildered.
How had she become the villain in just ten minutes?
Nathaniel met her gaze and could tell she was confused.
He explained, "I told him we're about to separate and that you might find him a scary stepfather. I asked if he'd choose me and Grandma, or you and a stepfather."
Mavis felt her anger rising.
"Nathaniel, you've gone too far! How could you say such things to Callum?"
He scoffed, looking away. "It's the truth, even if you won't admit it. But you can prove me wrong. If you just stop talking about divorce, there won't be a stepfather. That's the best proof."
Mavis found this absurd.
She had never mentioned finding Callum a stepfather and had no plans to remarry after the divorce.
Moreover, Nathaniel's words made it seem like he did not want a divorce, casting himself as the victim and her as the destroyer of Callum's happiness.
He clearly used his worst assumptions about her and intentionally told Callum to turn him against her.
The more she thought about it, the angrier she became.
Mavis glared at Nathaniel but decided arguing with him was pointless.
Instead, she picked up Callum and moved to the small cot beside the hospital bed, focusing on comforting and patiently explaining things to him.
Callum nestled in her arms, listening but sneaking glances at Nathaniel.
When the father-son duo made eye contact, Callum pouted.
He was upset that Nathaniel lied to Mavis, but he felt powerless to tell her the truth.
He puffed out his cheeks, trying to look angry.
Mavis noticed it and thought Callum was still mad at her.
She kissed and coaxed him, showering him with love.
"I know you're upset about Nathaniel and me separating. I'll talk to him again. We won't discuss separating until he's recovered. Would that make you feel better, Callum?"
The VIP room was well-equipped, so he did not have to go far.
Even so, the cast on his left leg was indeed troublesome.
After slowly drinking half a glass of water, he set it on the bedside table and made his way to the cot.
His gaze fell on Mavis's sleeping face.
She had not covered herself with a blanket, focusing on tucking Callum snugly while neglecting herself.
Nathaniel took his suit jacket and draped it over her. Then, he sat at the head of the cot, watching her sleep for a moment.
His gaze was intense as he wrestled with himself before quietly asking, "Who is that man?"
There was no answer. Mavis slept peacefully.
He had not expected a response, anyway, merely venting his frustration.
Troy had said Mavis admitted to caring for that man.
