The constant criticism was grinding Mavis' gears, and she glared at Nathaniel.
However, Nathaniel simply avoided her gaze, his demeanor icy.
Both seemed to be upset, though neither knew exactly why.
Mavis handed Nathaniel the perfectly peeled orange and grabbed a chair.
Then, she sat far away, burying herself in a random book.
Her reluctance to be there was obvious and she would rather read than attempt to have a conversation with Nathaniel.
The room's atmosphere grew tense.
Nathaniel ate the orange silently, his mood still sour despite the fruit's sweetness.
However, Troy felt suffocated by the tension and quickly made an excuse to leave.
He left an iPad and laptop for Nathaniel to work on if he was bored.
The stalemate lasted all afternoon, and none of them were willing to compromise.
At 8 p.m., the driver finally brought Callum over.
The little boy bounced into the room, instantly lightening the mood.
Mavis' eyes lit up as she hugged and kissed her son, playfully squishing his cheeks.
Callum pouted and whined, "Mommy, if you squeeze me anymore, I'll never lose these chubby cheeks."
Mavis laughed. "But you're just so adorable."
Without Mildred present, Nathaniel did not join their chat, allowing the mother and son to enjoy their moment.
Mavis showered Callum with affection for a while before leaving to discuss evening medication with the nurse.
Yet, here was his father, moving it with ease.
Callum quickly caught on and exclaimed, "I get it! Daddy, you're faking it! You're so naughty!"
Nathaniel put a finger to his lips, signaling Callum to lower his voice.
Callum pouted, confused. "But Daddy, you always said pretending to be sick is just like lying. It makes people worry over nothing. When I faked a tummy ache to skip my martial arts class, you spanked me so hard! Why can you do it if I can't?"
The unfairness of it all made the little boy increasingly angry.
He puffed up his chest, hands on his hips, and added, "Hmph! I'm going to tell Mommy and Grandma Mildred!"
Nathaniel moved quickly, catching Callum off guard and gently tugging his ear.
Though it did not hurt, the gesture was scary enough to make Callum whimper, "Daddy, you're so mean…"
"No fake crying," Nathaniel said, seeing right through the act. "I have my reasons for this, and I can explain. But you must promise not to make a fuss or let your mom know. Deal?"
