When Troy found Mavis, he overheard her phone conversation and quietly stopped, not wanting to interrupt.
Unaware of his presence, Mavis rubbed her forehead in frustration.
"How am I not being good to him? Of course, I care about him, but his coming here will only cause me more problems. The media in Froania is watching me closely. If we're seen together, it'll cause another scandal."
The stairwell was so quiet that Troy heard every word, and his eyes widened in disbelief.
A man who could cause gossip and scandal?
And Mavis admitted to caring about him?
Had she really been unfaithful?
It made sense why she denied liking Evan—there was already someone else.
Realizing this, Troy slipped away and returned to the ward, worried for Nathaniel.
Mavis did not notice anything; her focus was on the call.
"Mom, please don't worry about my situation. I'll figure it out. The Nicholls are one of the most influential families in Froania. Dad's old tactics won't work on them. I'll pick up Dylan. I have to go."
She hung up abruptly without waiting for Gracie's response.
However, her phone rang again.
This time, it was Nathaniel.
His voice was gruff and tinged with annoyance, asking, "Where are you."
Mavis made up an excuse. "The restroom."
Nathaniel was silent for a moment as if holding back his anger.
"Do you need two hours to use the restroom? You're here to take care of me. You should be by my side, not sneaking off to slack off."
Mavis was baffled by Nathaniel's scolding.
She glanced at her watch and noticed that she had only been gone for nearly an hour and a half.
Somehow, Callum had become Nathaniel's trump card to manipulate her.
Yet, despite knowing it was a trap, she would jump right in for Callum's sake.
"Fine, I'll be right there," she conceded.
Finally getting the answer he wanted, Nathaniel swiftly hung up.
However, his mood was still sour.
Mavis wasted no time and took the elevator.
In less than five minutes, she was already at Nathaniel's ward.
Nathaniel was obviously in a bad mood and seemed to have called her back just to boss her around.
He stared at her and said icily, "You can't even peel an orange properly. Is this how you take care of a patient?"
