Mavis stood up too quickly, and the rush of blood from sitting too long made her vision go dark.
Nathaniel instinctively reached out to steady her, but she had already grabbed the table and steadied herself.
After calming herself down, she walked over to get her coat while Nathaniel quietly withdrew his hand.
Once she was ready, they took the private elevator down to the employee cafeteria for lunch.
This surprised Mavis as she had not expected him to join her.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Nicholls."
"Hello, Mr. Nicholls."
Every employee they passed greeted Nathaniel, and they would also glance at Mavis.
She would have felt self-conscious under such scrutiny in the past, but she could not care less anymore. Let them look all they want.
After a morning of work, Mavis was starving.
She bought her lunch and found an empty table, assuming Nathaniel would not sit with her as it might invite gossip.
Much to her surprise, Nathaniel sat directly across from her with his lunch.
Eating with him at the company felt entirely different from dining at the Nicholls residence.
Here, she was just his assistant.
Yet, Nathaniel did not seem to mind and was just calmly eating his meal.
Hence, Mavis decided to focus on her own lunch, ignoring the potential for office gossip.
During the meal, Tommy approached and whispered something to Nathaniel, who then left with him.
Mavis enjoyed the peace, pulling out her phone to browse the news as she ate leisurely.
She was engrossed in her phone when a female voice interrupted her thoughts.
So, she needed a favor.
Mavis put down her utensils, feeling a bit resigned.
"What do you need?"
Seeing that Mavis had not refused, Greta quickly pulled out a medical report from her bag, her eyes red.
"This is my mom's lab report. She has cancer and needs a lot of money for surgery. My parents are farmers, and even their life savings aren't enough for the operation. I was hoping you could ask Mr. Nicholls if I could get an advance on a year's salary. I promise to work hard and repay the company. Please, Mavis, I'm begging you."
Mavis felt a pang of sympathy and could not bring herself to refuse her outright.
It was her mother, after all.
To convince her, Greta showed pictures and videos of her mother lying in a hospital bed.
"Mavis, please help me. I wouldn't ask if I weren't desperate. The doctor said that without this surgery, my mom… my mom might not make it."
