Over the past few days, Jamison had tossed and turned, his mind racing.
From his initial unwavering refusal, his heart had finally begun to soften.
He felt it was time they had a proper conversation.
"Ivy, I love you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you, to grow old together. I can't accept any accident taking you away from me, or else I'm afraid I would just follow you..."
Unlike Naylor, Jamison wasn't one to casually string together sweet nothings.
But right now, the words came out effortlessly, straight from the depths of his soul.
Ivy's previously uncomfortable expression shifted instantly, struck by his confession.
What nonsense was he spouting?
She stayed silent for a couple of seconds before speaking sternly. "We have two kids who are still so young, and you're actually thinking about a suicide pact? Jamison, since when did you become so childish?"
Jamison shook his head slightly. "I don't know, but I truly can't imagine a life without you."
"You... you're being ridiculous. A grown man acting like this!"
Jamison offered a bitter smile, murmuring as if to himself, "I never thought I'd be this much of a coward either..."
Having experienced the sheer terror of almost losing the love of his life, he never wanted to feel that way again.
Ivy took a deep breath, steadying her rising temper before firing back. "Since you can't imagine a life without me, why haven't you considered how I'm supposed to survive if you leave first?"
For a couple deeply in love, the one left behind was always the one who suffered the most excruciating agony.
Jamison fell silent, unable to find an answer.
Ivy stared at him, recognizing the shift in his resolve. He wouldn't have brought this up on his own if he wasn't wavering.
Changing her approach, she turned completely toward him and grasped his hand. "You're being too pessimistic. Director Wylde said the liver donation isn't that dangerous. I will recover, and so will you. Hope is right in front of us, so why refuse to take a step forward? Is your so-called love just an excuse to abandon me in the name of devotion, leaving me to suffer alone for the rest of my life?"
That last sentence struck Jamison right in the soul. His heart jolted, and he looked up at his wife.
Ivy swallowed hard, her gaze gentle yet unyielding. "Honey... let's do the surgery. Saving your life is the most fortunate and blissful thing I could ever do with the rest of mine."
Saving your life is the most fortunate and blissful thing I could ever do with the rest of mine.
Her words echoed endlessly in his mind.
He saw the fierce, burning love in his wife's eyes, alongside an unshakable determination. The heart that had been violently tearing itself apart for days finally settled, slowly melting under her warmth.
