The Ugly Wife’s Stunning Comeback novel Chapter 923

The atmosphere froze for a fleeting moment. Felicia cast a sidelong glance at the man beside her. It was rare to see him placed in such an awkward position. But this was Gavin, after all. Very few people would dare to publicly tease Max Hawthorne in such a manner.

"Mr. Hawthorne," a middle-aged gentleman called out, approaching them with a raised glass.

Max seamlessly masked his irritation, turning to the newcomer with the polished, gentlemanly smile of a refined aristocrat. He stepped forward to shake the man's hand. "Mr. Fox."

It was the host of the evening's gala.

Gavin also stepped forward to exchange greetings. When Mr. Fox's gaze landed on Felicia, Max smoothly introduced her. "This is my wife, Evelynn."

Felicia offered a polite, graceful smile and shook the man's hand. Mr. Fox turned to Max, clearly impressed. "You wife looks amazing tonight."

Max smiled in response, exchanging a few more pleasantries before Mr. Fox excused himself to attend to other guests. Taking the opportunity, Max guided Felicia away, refusing to spare Gavin another glance. Watching them leave, Gavin let out a low, amused chuckle.

Throughout the evening, Felicia accompanied Max as he navigated the social complexities of the room. She was poised, elegant, and entirely at ease. Max was notably protective of her, his gaze filled with a tender admiration whenever he looked at her. To any outsider, they were the picture of a perfectly matched, deeply loving couple.

During the event, Felicia spotted Holden, who looked as energetic and composed as ever. His entanglement with the Curtis family had clearly left him completely unscathed, whereas the Curtis family, having been thoroughly exploited by him, had now lost all their influence.

True to his word, Max did not drag her through hours of endless socializing. Noticing the faint exhaustion in her eyes, he personally bid farewell to Mr. Fox and guided her out of the venue.

Once inside the car, Felicia leaned back against the seat and closed her eyes to rest. Between the jet lag and the man's relentless demands from the night before, she felt utterly drained. Max watched her in silence, careful not to disturb her peace. When the car finally pulled up to the apartment building, the sound of the door opening jolted Felicia awake. She opened her eyes to see the man standing by the open door, his perfect profile outlined by the stark contrast of light and shadow.

"You are awake," Max noted.
