After the police finished taking photos and filed the accident report, a tow truck came and hauled the car away. Felicia called a taxi to head back into the city.
Once Felicia had left, Darin finally got into his car. Just as he settled in, his phone rang. It was Max, inviting him to dinner that night. Right as Max was about to hang up, Darin said, “Your wife was in a car accident, but she’s okay.”
Max paused. “What happened?”
“A kid ran out in front of her car, so she swerved and hit a tree.”
“Is she alright? Good.”
The call ended, and Darin drove off.
Felicia stopped by the hospital for a checkup, just to be safe. When the doctor told her everything was fine, she finally relaxed. She took a taxi home.
As she got out, she saw a Rolls-Royce parked outside. Max was getting out of the car, and Anne was right behind him.
“Mommy!” Anne came running over and wrapped her arms around Felicia.
Max had picked up Anne from school and brought her here straight away.
Felicia held Anne’s hand. “Grandpa Colton and Grandma Ava haven’t seen you in ages. They really miss you.”
Anne’s eyes lit up. “I miss them too! Let’s go inside, Mommy!”
Max pulled a few gift bags from the trunk and carried them over. Felicia watched him as he walked up.
“If you think there’s anything else we should bring, let me know,” Max offered. “I can have someone drop it off tomorrow.”
He really was acting like the perfect, thoughtful son-in-law.
Felicia didn’t answer his question. Her voice was light but a little mocking. “You’re really going out of your way for us.”
It was almost funny, seeing him so at ease walking into this house—like he hadn’t ever looked down on her family, like nothing had ever happened.
Max just said, “It’s what I’m supposed to do. It’s no trouble.”
Felicia let it go and took Anne inside. Max followed behind them.
