“When would I ever dare? I’ve basically turned into a turtle hiding in his shell,” Colton grumbled.
Ava shot him an irritated look. “Then stay in your shell. At least you won’t go around causing trouble.”
Felicia listened to their playful banter, a warm feeling blooming in her chest. Even their bickering felt like happiness.
Just then, Colton’s phone started buzzing. He grabbed it off the sofa. Ava caught a glimpse of the caller ID, then stood up and tugged Felicia to her feet. “We are not talking to your dad for now. Let’s take Sean upstairs.”
Felicia smiled. “Okay.” She scooped Sean into her arms and kissed his cheek, then followed Ava upstairs. She didn’t bother wondering who was calling her father.
Once they were out of sight, Colton answered, “Darin, are you done with work?”
“Still at the office, just taking a quick break,” Darin said. “Did you eat already, Dad?”
“We’ve already had dinner. What about you?”
“Haven’t eaten yet.”
“No matter how busy you get, you have to eat on time. It’s not worth getting sick. The weather’s getting cold, so remember to dress warmly.”
Darin made a small sound of agreement. “I know. I already asked my assistant to pick up dinner for me. Once things slow down, I’ll finally get a break for New Year’s.”
“You should take it easy during the holiday. Are you and your mom going back to Northwick for New Year’s?”
“Probably not,” Darin replied.
“I see. Staying in the Capital isn’t so bad either.”
Darin hummed in response.
