Felicia handed her coat to Max, slipped on her slippers, and strode toward her daughter.
“Careful, you’ll trip yourself,” she called out.
Every time Anne saw her mom, she lit up. She was like a little rabbit, all bouncy and bright. Anne was doing much better these days, but she still hadn’t shaken off that cough. The weather outside was gray and cold, so they’d been stuck indoors. No park trips, just afternoons spent at home.
Felicia sat down on the carpet with Anne, stacking blocks and laughing at her daughter’s wild imagination.
Max brought her a cup of ginger tea. “Here, this will warm you up.”
Felicia took the mug, curling her hands around it, grateful for the heat.
Max sat on the sofa, watching the two of them. “We’re having dinner at the old house for New Year’s,” he said to Felicia.
She took a sip of tea and glanced his way. “I heard about Andrea’s car accident.”
She met his eyes, looking for a reaction, but Max just stayed calm. “Yeah. She didn’t want to go overseas.”
Felicia’s lips curled into a bit of a smirk. “She stayed because of you, didn’t she? Out of all the guys she’s dated, I think you’re still her favorite.”
Felicia remembered what Savannah had told her. Back when Savannah was dating Darin, Andrea and Max weren’t together yet. Savannah was just a sophomore then, hoping to marry Darin someday, so she tried to get along with Andrea. But Andrea never appreciated it. In fact, she got more difficult with time.
Andrea had her own boyfriend back then, some good-looking rich guy, but she broke up with him after a few months. She immediately moved on to another wealthy young man, even though he was already engaged. Andrea’s family was powerful, so the fiancée couldn’t do much.
One time at a party, her ex and her new boyfriend ended up fighting over her. Andrea loved watching guys compete for her attention. It had always been that way. She was used to being surrounded by admirers and confessions of love.
