Her blue turtleneck sweater and pearl necklace made her look effortlessly elegant, the kind of style that turned heads without even trying.
Felicia hadn’t paid much attention to the man at first. But his gaze was impossible to ignore—so direct and bold. When she finally looked over, he met her eyes without flinching. There was even a hint of a smile on his lips, like he had every right to be caught staring.
Their eyes met, and the moment stretched.
Felicia’s voice was calm, but her eyes were sharp. “Why are you staring at me?”
Max gave her a soft, easy smile. “You really like pearls, don’t you? They look good on you.”
Now that he mentioned it, pearls were almost always part of her outfits.
Felicia turned back to her computer. Her tone was cool. “I didn’t realize you spent so much time paying attention to lady’s jewelry.”
Max shrugged, still smiling. “I’ve just been noticing you more lately.”
Her hand paused on the mouse, just for a second. She let out a quiet, sarcastic laugh. “Your feelings really are cheap and ridiculous.”
“Are they cheap? I think you know better than anyone.”
Felicia didn’t bother to answer. She finished up her last document, ate the pudding and salad, and left pumpkin soup untouched. Then she took off her glasses and rubbed the corners of her eyes.
“All done?”
Max’s voice cut through the quiet again.
Felicia glanced at him, but didn’t reply.
Just then, there was a knock at the door. Colt peeked in, looking a little surprised she was still there. He stepped inside, but then stopped short when he saw Max on the sofa.
“Mr. Hawthorne…”
“Colt, you’re still here?”
Colt looked a little flustered by Max’s friendly tone. It took him a second to recover. “I was just about to leave, but I saw Evelynn’s light was still on and thought I’d check in.”
