“Max, you...”
Max just glanced his way, then let his eyes move past him and into the apartment.
Felicia and Jeremy both noticed the man standing at the door. Felicia’s heart skipped. How did he find out where she lived?
Max barely looked at Jeremy before his gaze settled on Felicia. A sharp, mocking smile tugged at his lips.
He walked right into the living room.
Luke instinctively reached out to block his path. “Max, what are you trying to do?”
Max shot him a cold look. His voice dropped, low and dangerous. “Luke, do I need to remind you what you’re doing right now?”
Luke’s jaw clenched, but he didn’t move.
Max ignored him and walked straight up to Felicia, stopping only when he was right in front of her. He looked down, eyes narrowed. “Looks like you’re doing pretty well for yourself.”
Felicia met his stare, refusing to back down. “That’s none of your concern.”
He let out a humorless laugh. “You can come with me on your own, or I’ll take you. Your choice.”
Jeremy bristled, shooting Max a warning glare.
Felicia’s face was unreadable. Her voice was calm, almost indifferent. “Sorry. I already have plans today.”
Max’s gaze hardened, but she didn’t flinch.
Jeremy stepped in. “Mr. Hawthorne, forcing someone to do something against their will isn’t exactly gentlemanly.”
Max turned to him, his tone biting. “Are you saying you’re a gentleman, Mr. Milman?”
Max’s eyes stayed locked on Felicia, cold and unreadable.
Felicia didn’t look away. “Max, I already told you. I have plans. I’m not going with you.”
Silence fell over the room, thick and tense. The air felt heavier, like everyone was waiting for something to snap.
Suddenly, a voice broke through the tension. “So… what’s going on here?”
Max turned and saw Gavin in the doorway.
Gavin blinked at the scene for a second, clearly surprised by how intense things were. He glanced at Max, then Jeremy, then Luke, before settling back on Max. “Max, what are you doing here?”
Max stared back at him, his voice cool and flat. “I should be asking you the same thing.”
Gavin just grinned. “I’m here to pick up Evelynn. She’s my date tonight, so for tonight, she’s mine.” He tossed a look over at Jeremy. “Mr. Milman, when did you get into New York?”
