Max shot a pointed look at his mother. Miranda also looked at Tatiana, her eyes flashing with a clear warning. She had reminded Tatiana earlier that no matter how dissatisfied she might be, it was useless to fight it now. It was far better to go along with Max's wishes than to cause a scene and risk him never coming home again. Max had made his boundaries very clear. If she truly found it too difficult to accept Felicia, he would no longer bring Anne or her unborn grandson to visit.
Tatiana looked at the couple, let out a soft sigh, and asked, "Have the nanny and chef been rearranged?"
"Everything has been sorted out," Max replied evenly.
Tatiana turned slightly, reached into her bag, and retrieved a small velvet box. She handed it to Anne. "Give this to your mom."
Holding the box carefully with both hands, Anne happily trotted over to her mother and presented it. "Mom, Grandma got this for you."
Felicia stared blankly at the small offering, unsure of how to react.
"Open it up," Max encouraged gently.
Felicia reached out, took the box, and opened it in front of Anne. Inside rested the emerald heirloom ring, beautifully set in white gold.
"Wow, what a beautiful ring," Anne exclaimed with pure delight.
Max looked at the stunning piece of jewelry, then turned his attention back to Tatiana. "I will thank you on Felicia's behalf, Mom."
This ring had been given to his mother by his grandmother. Clearly, she was calling a truce and compromising. Tatiana merely glanced at her son and said nothing.
"Let me try putting it on you," Max offered. He picked up the ring, took Felicia's right hand, and slipped it smoothly onto her middle finger. The fit was absolutely perfect.
"Mom, you look so pretty with it," Anne giggled.
Felicia looked down at the heavy emerald on her hand, a wave of inexplicable unreality washing over her.
