"Hello," Darin answered.
Only silence greeted him. Assuming Max had hung up, Darin pulled the phone away to check the screen. The call was still active. "What is wrong with you now?"
"My stomach is killing me," Max said.
"If you are sick, go find a doctor. What do you want from me? I cannot cure you," Darin snapped.
"Go tell your sister." Max's tone was entirely serious, as if he were discussing a high-stakes corporate merger.
Darin let out a dry, sarcastic laugh. "Are you seriously trying to play the pity card right now?"
Max ignored the insult entirely. "What was she doing this morning?"
"What else would she be doing? Spending time with Anne." Darin decided it was best to keep Felicia's afternoon concert date with Jeremy to himself.
"The rumors are tearing Jeremy's reputation to shreds. Are you seriously not going to step in and do anything?" Darin asked. Although the story had naturally dropped off the trending lists, the private whispers within their industry circles were growing deafening. Several prominent figures had even called Darin personally to ask for the truth.
Max let out a chilling laugh. "What exactly do you expect me to do? Issue a public statement declaring that Felicia and I are divorced just to prove Jeremy's innocence?"
"Is that not the actual truth?" Darin countered.
Max's voice dropped to a freezing, absolute low. "He can keep dreaming." Max was perfectly content to wait and see exactly how long Jeremy could withstand the pressure.
Darin realized there was nothing left to discuss. Max and Jeremy had always clashed over business interests, and now, with Felicia caught in the middle, the animosity between them had reached a point of no return. The situation was completely unsalvageable.
"So you really just called to make sure I relayed your little medical emergency to Felicia?" Darin asked flatly.
"Forget it," Max muttered.
