Felicia set her phone down, ultimately deciding to ignore Max's silent plea for attention.
"Is everything alright?" Darin asked.
"Yeah," she replied. She turned and walked over to a nearby bench, taking a seat in the morning sun. Darin followed, sitting down beside her as he looked out across the yard.
"Whatever happened that night with Jeremy... I suspect Dannie acted entirely on her own," Darin said quietly.
Felicia cast a sharp sideways glance at him. "Are you stepping up to defend him now?"
"I am not defending him," Darin clarified gently. "I just do not want to see you stressing over his actions. Ultimately, you are the only one who suffers when your mood crashes."
"The best way to prevent my mood from crashing would be for him to stop hovering around me in the first place," Felicia stated firmly.
Darin let out a low chuckle. "Fair enough. I will be sure to pass that exact message along to him."
Felicia shot him a warning look before turning her gaze back to the children. They sat in comfortable silence for a long time before Darin spoke again.
"Once you start showing, you will not be able to hide it anymore." Even if Felicia could manage to avoid Max indefinitely, she could not keep him away from Anne. If Anne found out, Max would inevitably discover the truth. Given how aggressively stubborn Max was acting now, Darin knew that learning about the pregnancy would only make him more unyielding.
"I will deal with the future when it arrives," Felicia replied softly.
Darin nodded, knowing better than to push the subject. No amount of talking on his end would change anything. It all depended on that stubborn fool getting his own act together.
