Darin made his way downstairs to speak with Mr. Tate. As they conversed, his gaze swept across the glittering ballroom, but there was no sign of Savannah. He did not dwell on her absence.
He approached Mr. Tate and his wife, extending a polite hand. "Mr. Tate, Mrs. Tate, it is a pleasure to see you both," Darin greeted them, shaking hands and maintaining his usual humble demeanor. He engaged in a graceful, respectful conversation with the influential couple.
"Darin, you are an outstanding young man," Mrs. Tate praised warmly, her eyes brimming with clear admiration for him.
"You flatter me, Mrs. Tate," Darin replied with a modest nod.
As the idle chatter continued, Mrs. Tate seamlessly brought up her daughter. She lamented that it was a terrible shame her daughter was not returning to the country until tomorrow, otherwise, she would have certainly brought her along tonight to introduce her to Darin.
Finley strolled over at that exact moment, flashing a wide smile. "Darin, it has been too long. As it happens, I have a project I would love to discuss with you. I wonder if you might have some free time tomorrow evening?"
Finley's interruption was incredibly well-timed. Mrs. Tate had been mere seconds away from inviting Darin to their home for dinner tomorrow to set up a meeting with her daughter.
Hearing Finley's bold move, Mrs. Tate's expression stiffened slightly. Everyone in their elite social circle knew that Darin had previously been engaged to Finley's daughter.
Maintaining her polite smile, Mrs. Tate interjected, "Tonight seems like the perfect occasion, Mr. Kress. Why not have a proper chat with Darin right now?"
Finley chuckled smoothly in response. "A private meeting is always more appropriate for business matters. Tonight is strictly for casual mingling." Finley was no fool. He saw right through the Tates' thinly veiled intentions. He had heard plenty of rumors about Mr. Tate's youngest daughter. She was a brilliant graduate from Harvard University, striking and exceptional, and most threateningly, she was a few years younger than Savannah.
Even though Savannah had confidently sworn she was not afraid of any rivals stealing Darin away, Finley, as her anxious father, could not help but worry. Savannah had finally regained her passion for love and marriage, and he absolutely needed to guard this opportunity for her. He would not let anyone else snatch Darin up first. Yet, terribly inconveniently, Savannah had wandered off to God knew where at this critical juncture.
"Finley," Mr. Tate suddenly asked, his tone deceptively casual. "I heard the bank received a rather hefty regulatory audit penalty recently. Have you managed to sort all that out?"
