The Mind-Reading Mate Why Is the Lycan King So Obsessed With Me novel Chapter 413

Chapter 413: The Annoying Civil Officials

To reach Illvaris City, they had to pass through the imperial officials who guarded the main regions of the empire, and also go through the checkpoints to enter the Kingdom of Azmeria.

Salem had told her that entering Azmeria wouldn’t be difficult, but the imperial officers were unbearably arrogant and openly prejudiced against beasts.

Edmund had already informed the Emperor about their visit to the Vellmoria Empire, so they should have been allowed to pass without any trouble. Yet somehow, the officials still had the nerve to question the King of Beasts himself.

"Can we see the invitation from the King of Azmeria?" one of the civil officers asked the soldier outside the carriage. "Don’t take this the wrong way, but we’ve dealt with a few lycans who tried to impersonate the King of Noctvaris and sneak into the empire before."

"Didn’t you see the royal seal on the carriage?" Callen’s voice came from outside, sharp and annoyed. "That’s the emblem of Noctvaris. How could we possibly be impostors?"

"We can easily make a seal like that these days," another officer scoffed. "Besides, none of us have ever seen the beast king’s face. How can we be sure the man inside is really him?"

The civil officer continued, "So, please show us the invitation from the King of Azmeria, your IDs, and unload all your belongings from the carriage for inspection." 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺

"Are you toying with us?!" the Noctvaris soldier snapped. "It would take ages to inspect all of our belongings! The air is getting colder here! Do you want to be responsible if our queen catches a cold?!"

Inside the carriage, Edmund’s patience finally began to wear thin. He was about to step out when Primrose gently placed a hand over his. "It’s alright," she said softly, smiling. "Let me handle this."

She then opened the carriage window, startling the civil officer who had been about to knock.

"Good afternoon, Sir." Primrose met his eyes with a sweet, innocent smile. "What seems to be the problem?" She continued, "I know you haven’t seen the King of Noctvaris’s face before, but surely, you recognize me, don’t you?"

[Holy fuck! Is she really Lady Primrose? I thought her face had been badly scarred because of the king’s punishment, but she looks... fine.]

Who the hell spread that kind of rumor?! How dare they think her husband would disfigure his wife’s face!

[Maybe she’s just an impersonator?] the civil officer thought. [It’s not hard to find a woman with red hair in the beastlands, right? Then... maybe the king is fake too!]

Really? Primrose couldn’t understand how anyone could believe an impersonator would waste so much money building an authentic royal carriage just to risk being punished by both the Emperor of Vellmoria and the beast king himself.

It was absurd.

"Aren’t you little Leslie?" Primrose tilted her head, pretending to think. "You and your father once visited my home, didn’t you? I still remember your father begged mine to let you work as a civil officer."

"My father refused, of course, and you went to another noble for help." Primrose tapped her chin thoughtfully. "Ah, yes! Now I remember! Your father bribed the chief of civil officers to get you hired!"

The other officers immediately turned their heads toward Leslie, glaring at him in disbelief.

"Oh? Your friends don’t know about this?" Primrose gasped and pretended to be shocked. "I thought your friends already knew that you became a civil officer through nepotism instead of through examinations."

"T-that’s not true!" Leslie stammered, shaking his head desperately. "I didn’t do anything like that!"

"Really, little Leslie?" Primrose leaned her chin on her hand and smiled sweetly. "I could ask my father to dig into your record after this, but if you open that gate right now, maybe I’ll forget this whole conversation ever happened."

The officer facing her suddenly panicked. [Fuck! How could the Duke of Illvaris know about this?! He even refused my father’s request, yet he’s still digging into my background?!]

[Wait... this is really Lady Primrose?!]

"I—I need to discuss this with the other officers, and—"

Primrose cut him off. "Right now." She wiped the smile from her face and lowered her gaze. "It’s getting cold. If you still want to be an officer, open the gate before I lose my temper."

The officer froze, his mouth dry and hands trembling. He could feel the heavy pressure in her tone, like a queen used to being obeyed. Without another word, he quickly turned to his men.
