Matthew was just an outsider. It wasn't his place to tell Carson and Rebecca how to get along.
Pierre couldn't stand it anymore and stepped forward. "He's a man, Rebecca. Don't make him kneel. That's wrong."
Rebecca spotted Pierre and screamed at the top of her lungs. "How dare you show your face again? I haven't gotten back at you about what happened this morning. I'm going to scratch your face off."
As she spoke, she tried to scratch Pierre's face. The latter was terrified as he quickly backed off and yelled, "Can you do something about your crazy wife, Carson?"
Carson glared at Pierre. "Don't call Rebecca crazy. She's gentle, and she's just joking with you. She won't actually hurt you."
Furious, Pierre gritted his teeth. "If I fell for that, I'd be a goner, Carson. Are you trying to ruin my life?"
Carson pointed at himself. "Just look at me. I've been with Rebecca for all these years, and my face is just fine. She's just messing with you."
Pierre shook his head. "Can't you see my injury? Rebecca did that when I came to your place."
Before Carson could say anything, Rebecca pointed at Pierre and snapped, "Carson is in this situation because of you, Pierre. They say a man's worst fear is choosing the wrong career. You're the bad influence that got Carson into traditional medicine."
Pierre stepped back as he tried to argue his case. "I didn't lead him down the wrong path. Being a doctor is a respectable job.
"As a traditional medicine practitioner, he helps people get better, so he's well-respected. What's wrong with that?"
Rebecca looked at Pierre and spat on the ground, "Fuck off! What's all this talk about being respectable? Just look at yourself. As a traditional medicine practitioner, you're stuck in a hospital like a beggar.
"The townsfolk see you as a laughing stock. Are you seriously going to tell me that being a traditional medicine practitioner is respected?"
Pain flashed across Pierre's face. Rebecca's words were like a dagger to his heart.
Pierre was in a real mess for the last two years, but it was because he made some enemies. He figured he should clear things up.
"I'm struggling because I've stepped on the wrong toes. It has nothing to do with being a traditional medicine practitioner."
