As the elevator doors slid open, Reid couldn't help but glance over. Seeing Miss Mira and Mr. Nick stepping out, he let out a sigh of relief. Dealing with Penelope was no easy task for him.
Reid quickly approached the pair, offering a respectful nod. "Miss Mira, Mr. Nick."
Penelope turned, her gaze skipping right past Nick and landing on the girl beside him. The girl’s face was stunning, like a pristine snow lotus perched on a mountaintop, radiating an air of cool detachment. Penelope found herself momentarily captivated—this wasn’t quite what she had pictured.
Nick had already reached Penelope, asking, “Are you planning to join Mr. Jaime and the council in their overstepping ways?”
Penelope frowned, replying, “They’re just worried about Zach’s health.”
“That’s not a good enough reason to cause trouble, Penelope. I thought you, of all people, would see that,” Nick said in a calm tone.
Despite her competitive nature, Penelope had never gotten involved in family squabbles, earning her the respect of the main lineage. “Zach’s been nothing but kind to me. Shouldn’t I be here to check on him?”
Penelope sensed something different about Nick. She had driven all night from the South, without a break, simply out of concern for Zach. Now, being stopped and accused of overstepping felt a bit much.
“If that’s the case, you really shouldn’t be here,” Nick said, his gaze sharp. “Keir’s injury is top secret. You get that, right?”
Penelope’s expression shifted, catching the meaning behind Nick's words. She took a deep breath. “I understand.”
With that, she nodded slightly and gave up on visiting Keir, making her way to the elevator. The doors closed behind her, and she was gone.
Reid watched the elevator doors close and finally relaxed. “Mr. Nick, you’ve got a way with words. If you hadn’t shown up, I wouldn’t have been able to handle Miss Penelope much longer.”
