Nick finally trudged back into the house with Mirabella, looking a bit annoyed. In the dining room, the old butler had already set up breakfast. Nick pulled out a chair and sat down. Just as he took a couple of bites from his croissant, his phone buzzed.
It was a call from Reid at the hospital. “Hey, Mr. Nick, someone wants to see Keir,” Reid said, his voice a bit hushed. Nick squinted and glanced over at Mirabella sitting across from him, then asked, “Who?”
“It’s Miss Penelope.”
Reid hadn’t reached out to Mirabella since she’d never met Penelope, and Penelope wasn’t like Jaime or the council elders. Penelope was someone Keir had known since they were kids, the only one allowed to stay at the Davis Estate. Her visit to see Keir was bound to stir things up a bit. But since they didn’t let her in right away, Reid was unsure and decided to call Nick for advice.
“Tell her Keir needs to rest and isn’t seeing anyone,” Nick said, keeping his tone casual. His relationship with Penelope was neither close nor distant, but until Chester woke up, there couldn’t be any exceptions. Reid got the message loud and clear.
Nick ended the call with a slight frown. Knowing Penelope, she’d probably hang around until she got to see Chester.
Mirabella looked up at Nick. “What’s up?” she asked.
Nick snapped back to the present, deciding not to mention Penelope. He just smiled and said, “Nothing much.”
“I’m heading to the hospital after breakfast. What’s your plan, Nick?” Mirabella asked as she wiped her mouth with a napkin. It was time for Cassie to be discharged—any longer, and it’d just be a waste of resources.
Nick had planned to drop by the guild, but after hearing Mirabella, he changed his mind. “I’ll come with you.”
“Alright.” Mirabella nodded.
