“Yes,” Quinn said with an easy nod, “though I didn’t pull it off alone. A few loyal friends pitched in and made sure those little birds answered my call today.” She lowered herself beside Dawn, circling the child with protective arms. In a voice scarcely louder than the hum outside, she promised her daughter that no harm would find them while she still drew breath.
Dawn buried her face against Quinn’s chest, her small fingers bunching in the folds of her mother’s shirt, knuckles bone–white with fear. “But… but there are so many people outside, and Mr. Arnold is a bad man. He wants to hurt you, Mommy!”
The night before, after sneaking from her bed, Dawn had overheard every cruel word Edmund muttered in the hallway, and she had repeated the entire chilling confession to Quinn before dawn broke.
Quinn brushed a stray tear from Dawn’s cheek. “I know all about him,” she murmured. “But he can’t hurt me, not today. Your father’s people are already on their way. We just need those little planes overhead to buy us time.”
A sudden spark lit Dawn’s gaze, cutting through the fear like sunrise through fog. “My father? I have a father?”
“Of course you do,” Quinn said, meeting that hopeful gaze head–on. “Of course you have a father, and he loves you more than words.”
“What is he like?”
“Your father is a remarkable man,” Quinn began, her eyes softening at the memory. “He can seem distant at first, almost cold, yet when the moment calls for it, he turns playful–almost childlike. Most importantly, he is utterly dependable. Once he decides to stand by someone- or something–nothing in this world can shake his resolve.”
Five years had slipped by since she last saw Julius in the flesh.
More than once, Quinn had scoured the digital archives, hoping the web might surrender a hint of his current life.
Yet every trail dissolved into deliberate silence, as though an unseen hand kept brushing his name from the public record.
All she ever found were a handful of photographs from state galas–images of a man thinner than before, eyes sharpened to an almost glacial chill.
Still, Fabian had sworn Julius remained healthy, and that alone breathed hope into her restless

That is all I need. Let him be alive and well. The rest, we will figure out together.
Dawn worried her lower lip, voice barely above a whisper. “Will Daddy like me?”
“He will,” Quinn said without the slightest hesitation. “He’s going to adore you. exactly like his. The instant you meet, you’ll know.”
My eyes? So my eyes resemble Daddy’s. Dawn blinked.

A bullhorn crackled outside, slicing through the room with authority. “This is the police. You are surrounded. Surrender the comatose patient immediately or we will enter by force.”
The announcement jolted Dawn. She gave a small yelp and pressed even closer to Quinn’s side.
Quinn threaded her fingers through Dawn’s hair, soothing her with the steady rhythm of a heartbeat.
Megan’s voice quivered. “What do we do? The police have guns!”
She wasn’t wrong–those sleek little drones, impressive as they looked, carried no weapons capable of halting trained officers.
“Don’t worry.” Quinn swept aside a tangle of cables, clicked on the desktop microphone, and leaned in until her lips nearly brushed the mesh grille. “I’m Quinn Bridger–the coma patient you think was kidnapped. My friends pulled me from the hospital after staff tried to kill me on Edmund Arnold’s orders. He’s the criminal, not us. Stand down.”
The declaration thundered from every hovering drone, echoing down the street like a public indictment.
The officers ringing the house froze, their formation wavering as shock rippled through the line.
The officers Edmund had bribed only moments ago traded uneasy glances, their expressions blooming with raw astonishment.
“Has the woman in the coma… woken up?”
“Chief, what do we do now?”
“Quit staring and move! Restrain everyone inside. And that coma patient–so what if she’s awake? We’ll make sure she never opens them again.”
