Rage churned inside Edmund. He had planned to nurture a bond with Dawn, and now that fragile hope lay in shards. The child must have bolted because she feared exile to Azania.

His first priority was to bring her home–fast.

He barked orders at his security team. “Coordinate with the police. I don’t care how! Just make sure nothing happens to that girl.”

Meanwhile, on a rain–slick Kandrian highway, Megan gripped the wheel and guided Dawn through a maze of pursuing cruisers.

Twice she brushed the edge of disaster, tires screeching around blind curves.

Strangely, at the very moment one patrol unit closed in, its engine died and the car coasted to a halt.

Her phone rang over the roar of the wind. “This is Quinn Bridger. Megan, do exactly as I say.”

Megan blinked. “What?” The single syllable was all she managed.

Quinn’s voice stayed cool. “Tell me your exact location.”

“All right.” Megan rattled off street names and mile markers. Quinn then replied, “Follow my instructions. Forget the patrol cars–I’ll handle them.”

“Handle them?” Megan gasped.

Even while questioning, her hands obeyed, turning the wheel exactly as Quinn dictated.

Within minutes, Megan noticed something uncanny. Quinn anticipated every junction, every alley, the precise length of each traffic–light pause–even though Kandria’s navigation systems were rudimentary at best. Guided by calculations only Quinn seemed able to make, the sedan shot through the city like a needle through cloth.

“In thirty seconds, three freight trucks will block the next intersection. Cross before they enter the lane. The cruisers will be trapped; then swing left.”

Reality unfolded exactly as Quinn predicted.

When Megan finally parked at their makeshift safe house, adrenaline still pounded in her ears. Awe washed over her in a single breath.

Quinn sat silent, her answer swallowed by the hush of the room, eyes fixed on the tiny figure Megan guided gently across the threshold.

The girl looked painfully thin yet stubbornly bright in a faded floral sundress, black hair tied into a simple tail, cherubic face flushed with shy, determined courage.

Even without an introduction, Quinn knew.

Quinn opened her arms, voice trembling. “Dawn, I’ve missed you so much.”

Dawn’s eyes reddened with sudden, overwhelming relief. She sprinted forward, flinging herself onto Quinn’s lap and burying her face against the blanket. “Mommy, it really is you! You’re awake! I missed you–missed you every single day!” She sobbed, words tumbling out between hiccups.

Quinn lifted a trembling hand and smoothed the crown of Dawn’s head, her palm memorizing the silk of the girl’s hair. “I’m sorry,” she whispered. “Mommy slept far too long. From now on, I will stay right here, by your side, and watch you grow.”

She had already missed so much–first steps, first words, all the frightened nights a child needs a mother most.

Dawn pressed herself deeper into Quinn’s embrace. “Then I’ll stay with you too! I won’t let anyone pull us apart again!”

So this, Dawn realized, was what it felt like to be held by her mother. Warmth, steady and fierce, wrapped her small body in a safety she had only dreamed about. Mother and daughter clung to each other, time slipping away unnoticed.

Across the room, Megan listened as Angela explained the digital miracles Quinn had pulled off. Megan’s jaw practically hit the floor.

No wonder Quinn had directed their escape with such authority. The woman was extraordinary.

Now Megan could only pray that whoever was coming to retrieve Quinn arrived soon.
