I don’t care what it takesshe must die. Remember how much I pay you every single year,Edmund snarled. As for the audio, he would deal with it afterward.

You have my word. I’ll take care of it.

The call ended. Edmund glared at the television, eyes burning with venom.

Onscreen, a black silhouette filled the frame while a woman’s voice repeated in a steady loop, I am Quinn

With a furious snarl, Edmund hurled the remote. Glass shattered, sparks flaring across the ruined screen.

D*mn it!

The realization hit like ice water: the woman had regained consciousness.

Worseshe now knew he and the medical staff had plotted to kill her.

She could not, under any circumstances, be allowed to live another day.

If the men he’d bribed failed, he would end the job himself.

Edmund rose, pulled a pistol from his desk drawer, and sped off.

Outside the small house, officers tightened their formation, preparing to storm the door.

Inside, Megan and Angela hovered in anxious silence, fear flickering across their faces.

Quinn, however, remained perfectly composed, as though every move on the board still belonged to her.

They’re closing inthe circle’s tightening. They’re coming inah!

Angela’s scream tore through the roomnot out of terror, but sheer, stunned disbelief.

High above the halfdeserted main street, the flock of commercial drones wheeled in tight, deliberate circles. Without warning, their undersides spat brilliant clusters of flame that hissed downward, forcing the advancing officers to scramble for cover at the barricades.

Each burst detonated midair. Instead of shrapnel, fountains of colored sparks blossomed outwardlavish, harmless, unmistakably festive. It was a battlefield painted to look like a

What on earth?Angela’s voice wavered, eyes locked on the glittering sky. I thought those drones were unarmed?

Technically, they are,Quinn replied, calm as if discussing the weather. They’re civilian models, no real weapons onboard. But fireworks fit nicely in the cargo bay, sothink of it as an improvised fireworks show.

Fireworks show?

Angela and Megan stared at Quinn, as though the woman beside them had just rewritten the laws of common sense.

Even fireworks can sting,Quinn went on, her tone brisk. They buy us minutes. Meanwhile, every TV in town is looping my statement. Public outcry plus a sky full of sparks should keep the hotheads outside from rushing inat least for a short while.

The two women exchanged a fraught glance, throats working as they swallowed hard.

You must have been someone pretty formidable once,Megan murmured, wonder edging past her fear.

Not formidable,Quinn answered, lips curving in a quick, wry smile. Just capable of looking after myself.”

For the moment, the riot of color overhead held the street in a tense stalemate, officers clustered behind squad cars while emberdust drifted down like neon snow.

Chief, what now? We can’t break through!one officer shouted, frustration riding every syllable.

The chief exhaled through his teeth. Hold position. Those drones can’t carry unlimited payloads. The fireworks will run out.

Never had he imagined Quinn to do that.

He could order a full assault, but a pileup of injuries would spark headlines he had no appetite for.

Waiting, for now, was the only card he had left.

Just then, several black SUVS screeched onto the scene, doors flying open before the engines died. Edmund stormed out first, fury rolling off him like heat from asphalt.

If the police are this useless,” Edmund barked, sweeping an arm toward the house, I’ll handle it myself. Shoot those drones down. I believe the people inside have abducted the child I adopted! I’m going in.

The night before, Dawn had slipped away from the estate, and traffic cams had caught a suspicious car with a small passenger riding shotgun.

To Edmund, it added up neatly: the two women who spirited away a comatose patient must have taken Dawn as well.

He and his security team leveled their weapons and opened fire at the circling machines.

One drone after another shuddered, sparked, and spiraled to the asphalt in broken heaps.

Seeing that, the chief grimly motioned his own units to join the advance.

They’re really coming! Those drones won’t hold them back much longer!Megan’s voice cracked with panic.

Quinn had never expected the makeshift barrier to last; it was only ever a sandcastle against a tide.

Megan, Angelatake Dawn and find a place to hide, she instructed, already pivoting to the next necessity.
