The penthouse was silent when Alejandro returned. Too silent. The kind of silence that felt deliberate–heavy, waiting.

He closed the door behind him, setting his keys on the counter. The faint hum of the refrigerator was the only sound breaking the stillness. His brows furrowed. The lights were off. Not a single one. Nivera hated the dark especially with what had happened in the past few days.

His brow furrowed. “Cabezota?”

No answer.

Something was wrong. She never left without him – not after what happened. And even if she had, security would’ve notified him the moment she stepped out of the building.

He frowned, loosening the top buttons of his shirt as his gaze swept the living room. The faint scent of her perfume lingered in the air–warm, sweet, floral.

He moved deeper into the room, steps slow but steady. “Cabezota?”

He called again, his voice lower, rougher this time. “Cabezota?”

Still nothing.

He took a step forward, ready to sweep through the rooms, when he caught sight of a slender silhouette by the floor–to–ceiling window, her outline barely visible against the faint glow of the city beyond.

She stood still, one hand resting on the glass as though the lights below could offer her answers.

Relief hit him first, followed closely by unease. Something in her stillness wasn’t right.

He turned on the light, and she flinched slightly but didn’t move away. “Cabezota,” he said again, softer now.

“Nivera?”

She still didn’t turn. She just stood there, her head tilted slightly, and her eyes on the skyline as if the world below mattered more than his voice.

Alejandro’s chest tightened. He switched on another light, casting the penthouse in a soft golden hue, and moved closer until he stood a breath away.

“Cabezota?” His tone softened now, a question threaded with concern.

This time, she tilted her head a little to the side – just enough to let him know she heard him- before her gaze drifted back to the glittering sprawl of the city.

Alejandro frowned. “What’s wrong?”

Her silence stretched, sharp and cold.

He exhaled, dragging a hand through his hair as he didn’t like her being cold to him. It was clear she was upset at him but he didn’t even know why.

“Is it because I came back late?” he asked quietly. “I had some things to take care of. I didn’t mean to-”

If it was up to him, he would have come back sooner but all thanks to the fact that he hadn’t been to the office in some time, he had an overwhelming amount of work, piled up for him.

Still nothing. Not even a glance.

“Nivera,” he said, more firmly this time, stepping closer. “Talk to me.”

Her shoulders lifted faintly a sigh maybe – but she didn’t move. The quiet started to grate at him. He wasn’t used to this kind of silence from her. She could fight, scream, glare at him till he lost his mind – but not this. Not this stillness that felt like she was miles away.

“Nivera.” His voice dropped low, rough. He reached out and caught her arm, gently but insistently turning her to face him. “What’s wrong, Cabezota? Did something happen?”

Her face came into view, her expression calm

“Don’t shut me out like this,” he murmured, stepping closer. “Did anyone do something?” His tone hardened instantly. “Tell me. If someone-”

At that thought, his blood boiled. If someone had even looked at her the wrong way—

“No one did anything.” Her voice cut through his threat like a quiet blade.

Alejandro blinked, thrown off. “Then what is it?”

She smiled faintly – but it wasn’t warm. It was tight, sad. “Nothing you’d understand.”

He narrowed his eyes. “Try me.”

Her gaze flicked up to his, and for a second, he saw something raw in them- hurt, anger, fear – all tangled together. But then she looked away again, arms crossing.

“It’s you,” she finally stated.

Alejandro blinked, stunned. “Me?”

“Yes.” She took a small step back, shaking her head. “You.”

He stared at her, confusion etching his features. “Okay, tell me what I did so I can make it right?” he said softly.

Her lips twisted into a humorless smile. “That’s exactly the problem. You don’t even realize it.”

“Realize what?”

Nivera sighed in exhaustion and he tapped his foot impatiently, while waiting for her to speak.

“I just realized something tonight,” she murmured. “Something about us.”

“Us?” His jaw clenched. “What about us?”

“That there isn’t really an us, Alejandro.”

He stiffened, not quite understanding what she was getting at. “What the hell does that mean?”

She exhaled, long and shaky. “It means I don’t even know what to call what we have. You tell me what to do, where to go, who to see. You keep me locked away for my safety, you say. But the truth is… it feels like control.”

His eyes darkened. “Control?” where was this coming from? Did someone put the thought in her head.

“Yes,” she snapped, meeting his gaze fully now. “You say it’s protection, but you never let me breathe. You make decisions for me, you get angry when I question them—”

“Because you don’t understand how dangerous it is out there,” he ground out. “You think I enjoy being paranoid every damn minute you’re not within reach?”

“I think you like it,” she threw back, her voice shaking. “You like having me where you can see me. You like knowing that I’m here–safe, quiet, yours.”

“Because you are mine,” he said through clenched teeth.

The words were out before he could stop them — low, possessive, unyielding.

Nivera stared at him for a long moment, her chest rising and falling fast. “See?” she whispered. “That’s what I mean. What does being yours mean? A puppet you control for fun? After all that was the reason you kept me around.”

“Nivera…” Alejandro started but she refused to let him speak.

“I told myself you were different,” she whispered. “That all the things you did were because you cared. Because you felt something. But I can’t keep pretending anymore.”

His chest constricted. “Pretending?”

“That this is normal. That whatever we are is real.” Her voice cracked slightly but she held his gaze. “We act like a couple, Alejandro. You touch me like you own me. You get jealous when someone so much as looks my way. But you never say it. You never tell me what we are only that I’m yours.”

Her words cut straight through him.

“You can’t keep me locked away and still refuse to put a label on it.” she whispered. “I need to know what this is–what we are. Because I can’t keep living in this gray space between belonging to you and being your prisoner.”

Alejandro clenched his fists, struggling to keep his composure. “You think I’m keeping you here for control and that I’m trying with you?”

“Then enlighten me,” she challenged, stepping closer. “Because I’m done guessing. Tell me, Alejandro. What am I to you?”

He opened his mouth, then shut it again. Why the hell couldn’t he just say it?

The silence stretched, and Nivera’s expression faltered–something fragile breaking behind her eyes. She gave a shaky laugh. “Exactly what I thought.”
