Chapter 527
It was in this very room that he had spent an entire afternoon talking with Desmond. By the end, Desmond had agreed to let Charlotte marry him.
What he never expected was how fiercely Charlotte would resist the marriage. She had been so determined to refuse that she broke with her family and left for Harbor City on her own.
The day she ran away to escape the arranged marriage, he had nearly chased after her. In the end, he let her go.
It was not because he was giving up, but because he wanted to give her space. He wanted her to have time to think about what she truly wanted and, hopefully, come back to him of her own free will.
When she first arrived in Harbor City, Desmond cut off all her credit cards. She was completely alone in an unfamiliar city with no family or friends, finding her own place to live and her own job. During her first year working as a junior lawyer, she earned only $800 a month.
It tore him up inside. He went to Lena and Mia many times, transferring money to them so they could help Charlotte.
Back then, she was still furious at Desmond for remarrying and for deciding her marriage without her consent. She had made up her mind to cut ties with him completely.
She knew that once she severed her ties with Desmond, she would no longer be the Riley family’s heiress. She wouldn’t be in the same social circle as her old friends.
If she accepted their money, she would have to pay it back one day. But with the salary she had back then, it would have taken years of going without to repay large sums.
She refused any large transfers, only accepting small amounts that matched her income at the time, and she eventually paid those back. She would rather live a harder, more exhausting life than let her friends support her financially.
He had gone to Harbor City many times, but only watched her from a distance. He never dared approach her, afraid of scaring her or making her hate him even more. After all, she had gone there to escape the marriage.
Later, Charlotte started dating someone.
He still remembered the night he found out. Jealousy had nearly driven him to strangle that man, Zac Gibson. What right did Zac have to be with her?
He wasn’t as good–looking, as capable, or as accomplished. Worst of all, Zac was a notorious playboy who went through women as easily as changing clothes. He was already tainted and had no business being with her.
He had Zac investigated and learned that Zac had a so–called “true love,” Wendy Cooper. What

disgusted him even more was that several of Zacs ex–girlfriends resembled Wendy, and Charlotte happened to share some of those features, although she was far more beautiful.
Zac had dared to treat the woman he loved as someone else’s stand–in.
If he wanted to bring Zac down, it would be easy. With his status as the most powerful man in Jersey City, he had no shortage of people eager to curry favor with him in Harbor City. All he had to do was drop a hint, and someone would take care of the rest.
Zac was known for partying and drinking with women who were always gorgeous and seductive. Being the womanizer he was, he never turned them away. Before long, he was spending so much time and energy on those women that he had no interest left for Charlotte.
Eventually, someone leaked photos and reports of Zac’s affairs to Charlotte. She chose to turn a blind eye, but after that, she no longer let Zac less her, no matter how hard he tried.
The problems that plagued the Gibson Corporation and eventually led to its complete financial collapse were his doing as well.
Even Wendy’s return to the country had his fingerprints on it.
