Now, seeing Henry’s little face scrunched up as he tried so hard not to cry, everyone went quiet. Even Teddy, who was usually the strictest, finally caved. “Andre, maybe let’s wait until this afternoon?”
Andre shook his head. “My boy’s brave. Yesterday, he promised me and Mia he wouldn’t cry this morning so he could come to school and play. He’ll keep his promise, right, kiddo?”
Henry nodded from his dad’s arms.
A moment later, his sad eyes drifted over to his mom, who looked like her heart was breaking for him.
Mia couldn’t take it anymore and opened her arms. “Come here, sweetheart. Let Mommy give you a hug.”
Henry immediately switched sides, snuggling into his mom’s embrace.
Wayne, still in his dad’s lap, saw his big brother looking so miserable that he started to pout too.
In Mia’s arms, Henry pressed close to her ear, his little voice trembling and thick with tears, whispering so only she could hear, “Mommy, I’m scared. I want you…”
Mia hugged him tighter, whispering back, “Mommy’s school is really close, honey. If you miss me, just give me a call. I’ll come see you after class and pick you up after school, okay?”
Henry looked up at her with those heartbreaking eyes.
Mia sat with him for a while, helping him work up his courage. Even though Henry’s lip quivered and his eyes were shiny with tears, he stayed strong, just like he promised his dad. He wiped his eyes with the back of his little hand and didn’t let a single tear fall.
“Henry, you’re the big brother. See how Wayne and Lizzy are watching you? You have to set an example. Be brave today, get to know your school, and next year when Wayne comes, you’ll show him the ropes, right?”
Henry nodded, sniffling.
People had heard rumors that Andre’s beloved son was starting kindergarten this year. There were even bets on who would get to attend the same school as Andre’s boy. Then the rumors got shut down, and everyone figured it wasn’t going to happen—until today, when he showed up in person.
And he wasn’t the only one turning heads.
There was the Arrowood family’s young master, standing with a striking woman by his side, arms crossed, looking cool as ever while Mars lounged next to her.
He leaned casually against the car door, one arm slung around the woman’s shoulders. “Milka, see how smart we are? We didn’t have to fight for a spot like the others.”
And from the Newtown family, their famous “top dog” showed up too, holding his “little sidekick” in his arms. As if folks didn’t already know he was a doting dad—he kept playing with his daughter’s chubby little legs, swinging her gently.
Next to him, the woman nudged his arm. “Hey, you’re gonna shake Lizzy’s feet right off at this rate!”
