Anya said, “Chad, Chunky’s one of us.”
Chunky jumped in, always quick with a joke, “Right? Leo, you had me prepping a wedding gift last night, and now I’m suddenly an outsider? Fine, I’m docking a thousand off your gift.”
Anya couldn’t help but laugh.
In the parking lot, Anya slipped into the back seat while Leo got behind the wheel. “Let’s drop Anya at her office first, then we’ll cruise around and check out the area. Getting to the studio by ten is plenty of time,” Leo said.
As they drove, Anya glanced at Chad. “Hey, last night you said Mr. Miles was coming by the company. What’s he doing at your studio anyway?”
Leo shrugged it off, “He’s just a friend, coming by for some tea and a chat, nothing special.”
Chunky nodded along. “Yeah, just a little chit-chat, that’s all.”
Anya let it go, and twenty minutes later they pulled up to an office building.
She grabbed her purse and hopped out. “Chad, I’m off. See you! And remember to get some rest at lunch, or you’ll run out of steam.”
After watching Anya head inside, Leo circled the block once with Chunky, checking out the traffic and making sure the place felt safe and convenient. Satisfied, Leo finally headed to the studio.
On the way, they started talking business again.
At Cedillo Inc., Noah walked into the office. “Boss, looks like Leo’s having a rough time making progress.”
Andre didn’t even look up. “That’s part of the process.”
Noah hesitated. “Right.”
Andre raised an eyebrow. “Something else?”
Noah stalled. “No, that’s all.”
But he just stood there.
When class ended, the kids scattered in every direction. Henry, the littlest one, came running up, standing on tiptoes. “Mom, save me some ice cream!”
Mia handed him the cone so he could take a couple of licks. “Good?”
“Super good!” Henry took a big bite of the cone. They finished it together, and Henry raced back for the next round of class.
Mia sat on the sidelines, tearing open a bag of chips, munching as she watched. During the break, while the other kids lined up, Henry darted back over, mouth wide open, waiting.
Mia popped a chip in his mouth. He grinned, then darted back to the group.
At five o’clock, class was over. Andre stood outside, hands in his pockets, watching his family through the window.
Henry, still in his crisp white uniform, sat on a bench trying to shove his feet into his shoes. After a few tries, his sweet little temper started to bubble up.
Mia was just about to help when Henry’s eyes caught his dad waiting outside. Suddenly, he started making a fuss, all eager for dad’s attention.
