Donnie stayed quiet.
“Donnie.”
He blinked and snapped to attention. “Oh—yeah, boss. Right away.”
Chad gave a nod and headed back to his office.
Halfway across the world, the plane was just about to land. Molly Cedillo set aside her stack of documents and rubbed her eyes. “If I look at one more page, I’ll go blind.”
Her coworkers cracked up, laughter filling the cramped cabin.
Once they landed, the group filed out of the airport together. Molly ducked into the restroom to check her makeup, fixed a stray hair, and, feeling flawless, slipped on her sunglasses before strutting outside.
Their host was already waiting at the curb.
From behind her own shades, Jade took one look at the man and smirked. “Not bad. Another young hotshot.”
The man was visibly surprised to see the group led by a woman.
“Hello, I’m Patrick, head of Elite Corporation.”
Jade paused, her mind turning over the name. Patrick... why did that sound so familiar?
Back at the station, Chad checked his watch. Molly should’ve landed by now, but his phone stayed stubbornly silent. Unable to wait any longer, he called her first.
Molly had just slid into the backseat of a car when her phone rang. “Hey, Chad.”
“Chad, everyone knows Donnie’s your protégé. It puts you in a tough spot...”
Chad’s background made him impossible to bribe, but Donnie? He’d started as Chad’s apprentice—loyal, reliable, but from a modest family. To some, that made him an easy target.
“We’ve checked his accounts. He’s been spending a lot lately—got married, bought a new place, has basically no savings. On top of that, we heard his wife’s planning to study abroad. That’s at least seventy grand a year. Big pressure. Do you think he could’ve accepted outside help because of it?”
“No way.” Chad’s answer was immediate and solid. “You might think I’m just protecting my own, but I know Donnie. He’s all heart, and he’s in this job for the right reasons. Money means nothing to him. Sure, he might be strapped for cash, but if he needed fifty thousand, he’d only have to ask. I’d spot him five hundred grand if he needed it. Why would he risk everything for such a small amount?”
“So could there be some other reason?”
Chad’s stare was razor-sharp. “You tell me—what other reason could there be?”
The room went quiet. Chad finally said, “We make plenty of enemies in this business. Anonymous tips—who knows if they’re true? If you have real evidence, I’ll cooperate fully. Suspend him if you have to, investigate whatever you must. But Donnie’s a young cop who’s handled more cases than most. Don’t break his spirit over a rumor.”
