“To keep things from going that way, we wanted her to meet more people, to remind her she had choices. But she’s just so stubborn. Even when she’s upset, you’re still the one on her mind. I’ve seen how genuine you’ve been lately. Honestly, even if we tried to stop you two, it wouldn’t work. But as her parents, we have to think about something real here. It isn’t about money or status. The problem is that you’re on different sides of the world. Aurora is our only daughter. One day, she’ll run the Robinson family and manage the Robinson Group. After college, she started at the bottom of our company and worked her way up. She’s earned every bit of what she has. She’s not going to give that up. And honestly, we can’t stand the thought of her moving that far away. So here we are, stuck.”
Orval spoke up then. “My wife’s right. What I’m about to say might not sound great. Maybe it’s selfish, but I hope you understand. We both want Aurora’s future husband to support her career, to be there for her when she needs him. A marriage lasts when two people are together, lifting each other up. If you’re in different places all the time, it just doesn’t work. Feelings fade.”
His words made it clear where they stood. Aurora curled her fingers tight in her lap and pressed her lips together, not saying anything. She’d loved Billy since they were young. But she always knew what she was responsible for, knew what she wanted for herself. That’s why, after all these years, she still hadn’t taken that last step with him.
She’d thought about the reality of their situation. She didn’t want him to have to give anything up for her. The Brown family’s business was overseas. That wasn’t something you could just walk away from for love. If their positions were switched, she knew she couldn’t do any better than Billy had.
But she couldn’t let him go. That’s why she’d kept things between them just as they were for so long. There were times she’d thought about ending it. She even tried to pull away, to talk to him less, to create some distance. But every time, she failed. She just couldn’t do it. She couldn’t forget him. She just loved him more as time went on.
This time, though, she’d finally made up her mind. Billy loved her too. After all these years, why couldn’t they be together? So what if they lived in different countries? They could travel more. It would be tough, but at least they could see each other a few days every month.
She’d already talked to her parents before coming here, but she never expected them to bring it up again in front of everyone. Now, sitting here, Aurora felt both tense and heartbroken. Who would ever agree to what her parents were asking? To be honest, wasn’t it kind of like asking Billy to marry into her family?
Billy was the Brown family’s only son. He was the one in charge. His business overseas was huge. How could he just leave it all behind? Her parents’ request was almost impossible.
