Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 1061

Aaron caught on right away.

Every action leaves a mark. There’s no such thing as a flawless crime, not unless someone is covering it up. And honestly, what’s more convincing to the public than a spotless reputation?

It was a bold theory, but it made sense.

Aaron didn’t waste a second. He left to start digging for answers.

Once Aaron was gone, Dennis headed over to find Camila. She’d just finished her shower and was on a video call with Lillian. Their little girl had been apart from them for days, and she was putting on her sweetest voice, telling Camila how much she missed them.

“Lillian feels like it’s been forever. I really miss you and Daddy. When are you coming home?”

Camila’s heart softened at her daughter’s tiny, sincere voice. She smiled, her tone gentle and comforting. “I miss you too, baby. But we can’t come back just yet. I’m not sure when we’ll be home.”

Dennis overheard their conversation, slipped his arm around Camila’s shoulders, and leaned in so Lillian could see him. “Mommy and Daddy still have some important things to finish up. As soon as we’re done, we’ll come home right away. You be good for Grandpa and Grandma, okay?”

Lillian nodded, not making a fuss. “Okay, I’ll keep waiting for you. I’ve been really good. I drank a lot of water today, and I even started a new painting this afternoon. It’s not finished yet, but maybe it will be by the time you’re back...”

She went on, listing all the things she’d done that day. Dennis and Camila listened, smiling and patient, letting her talk as long as she wanted. When Lillian finally started yawning, they knew it was time to say goodnight and ended the call.

Dennis put Camila’s phone on the nightstand, then turned to her with a smile. “Is there anywhere you want to go tomorrow?”

He’d planned this trip for her, but honestly, he was loving every minute of their time together.

Camila shook her head. “Not really. We’ve been here a few days and have pretty much seen everything worth seeing.”

Dennis looked in the rearview mirror. Sure enough, a black car was staying just behind them, not too close but never falling back.

“Lose them,” Dennis said, pulling Camila closer, his protective instincts kicking in.

Her tiredness disappeared, replaced by a jolt of nerves. She looked up at him, worry in her eyes. “Is it someone after you? Why are they following us? Are we in danger?”

Dennis’s expression turned thoughtful. He wasn’t sure yet. Was it someone connected to Professor Keri? Or maybe someone else from back home?

He hugged her tighter, keeping his voice steady and calm. “I’m not sure. We’ll get to the bottom of it later. Right now, we just need to lose them.”

If he’d been alone, Dennis wouldn’t have hesitated to face whoever was following. But with Camila there, all that mattered was keeping her safe.
