Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 1062

With Camila right next to him, Dennis refused to take even the smallest risk.

Camila still looked uneasy. Her tiny hand clung to Dennis’s shirt as she kept checking the rearview mirror, watching the car that was still tailing them.

Up ahead, the road split at an intersection. The light was about to turn red. Their driver floored the gas, squeezing through just as the light changed, and managed to put some distance between them and the car behind. But their pursuers didn’t care about traffic laws. They sped up, blasting through the red light, completely ignoring the chaos they left behind.

Other cars swerved out of the way, and one even crashed into the guardrail. The sight was enough to make Camila’s heart leap into her throat. She squeezed her eyes shut, shrinking into Dennis’s arms for comfort.

Dennis stayed calm, his eyes locked on the chasing car. He could tell they weren’t trying to kill them, at least not outright. Instead of ramming into them, the pursuers kept making reckless moves, trying to force them off the road and stop them.

Luckily, their driver was a pro. His skills left no room for mistakes. When the other car tried to cut them off again, he slammed on the brakes and spun the steering wheel, taking a sharp turn in the opposite direction. The pursuers reacted too late, shooting up onto the highway overpass. By the time they managed to turn around, Dennis’s car had already blended into traffic and disappeared.

“Fuck!” The big man in the black sedan pounded the steering wheel in frustration, then snatched up his phone and made a call.

Dennis didn’t head back to their hotel after losing the tail. He knew their location had probably been compromised. If someone was bold enough to chase them in broad daylight, the hotel was definitely a trap waiting to happen.

Instead, he brought Camila to his private villa. Aaron immediately arranged for extra security, making sure guards were stationed around the property.

Dennis got right to the point. “Was it someone sent by Professor Keri?”

Aaron shook his head. “I don’t think so. If it were Keri’s people, it wouldn’t make sense for them to wait until we left the capital. The capital is his territory, and he’s got people to cover for him. If he wanted to make a move, he would have done it there where the odds were in his favor.

“Our investigation shows that the men who chased you tonight were from an underground assassin group here in Kaston. They’re basically mercenaries. They do whatever you pay them for.”

Dennis glanced at the file Aaron handed him, his eyes narrowing with a hint of surprise and curiosity. “Hitmen? Someone actually put a price on my head?”
