"Are you not going back to your room? Wanna bunk with me tonight?" Stephanie teased with a playful nudge.
"I wouldn't want to intrude on your alone time," Emily retorted with a smirk.
"Whoa, look at Emily all grown up and in the know! But are you sure you can handle sleeping alone?"
"Why wouldn't I? I'm eight years old now! I'm a big girl, I don't need to sleep with you adults."
Stephanie couldn't help but laugh. "I've never heard of someone growing up overnight... Emily, did someone say something to you? I've never minded having you around; it's always a joy for me!"
Grinning, Emily grabbed her hand and pulled her toward the bed. "I love hanging out and being goofy with you too!"
"So why the sudden solo act?"
"Because Emily's a big girl now... I'll sleep on my own at night. Spending the day with you is plenty."
"Did something happen when you went home yesterday? Did your mom say something?" Stephanie asked, a hint of suspicion in her gaze.
"No way... And don't you dare call my mom about this! If you really can't stand being apart from me, I'll just sleep with you..." Emily blurted out, her heart racing with worry.
"Don't sweat it, I won't bother your mom over something so trivial."
"Good, because she's super busy lately... Aunt Gracie just had a baby, and Mom's running the studio all by herself!"
"Your mom is amazing! Not just an actress but a boss lady too!"
"Hehe, she's really happy when she's working..."
"Emily... I totally forgot to ask you, why did Sullivan suddenly take a sick leave?"
"Huh? I don't know..."
"But he was the one who took you home last night... and now he's out sick?"
Seeing the message, Emily let out a sigh of relief. She half-expected Sullivan to refuse to see her after last night's incident.
"Stephanie, Sullivan sent his address... I think he's okay with us visiting."
"Tell him we'll come by tomorrow morning... and ask if there's anything special he wants to eat that we can bring."
"Sure."
A little while later, Emily looked at Stephanie, completely baffled. "Sullivan wants..."
"What is it?"
"Homemade cornbread... the kind with pickles inside."
Stephanie was clueless... that was something from her childhood, often eaten in poorer households when there wasn't much else. But nowadays, who even ate that stuff? Where on earth was she going to find homemade cornbread with pickles?
