Chapter 143 Strange scent
Marcelo pulled up to the main building in his car. He glanced upwards, noticing the master bedroom first.
The room was dark.
Could it be that Renee hadn’t returned yet?
“Is Renee home?” As soon as Marcelo walked into the house, he asked the servant a question.
“Mrs. King is already in her room for a while,” the servant replied.
Marcelo swung the master bedroom door open, and in the soft moonlight, he noticed her in the center of the bed. It moved almost imperceptibly, synchronized with Renee’s quiet breaths.
A frown crept onto Marcelo’s face.
Renee hadn’t left a light on for him.
This marked the first occasion since their marriage that she had gone to bed early, yet she didn’t leave any lights on for him.
Usually, if he was not in the room, a floor lamp would be lit.
Though unspoken, this small gesture always brought joy to Marcelo, as if Ellie was waiting for him.
But her unusual behavior tonight stirred a sense of unease in him.
However, this feeling disappeared in an instant.Maybe she forgot.
Marcelo silently made his way to the bathroom, carrying his night robe with him.
He was unaware that the woman in the bed had opened her eyes as soon as he closed the door.
With a stoic expression,Renee gazed out of the window at the sliver of a crescent moon.
Even though she was deep in sleep, somehow, she woke up the moment Marcelo cracked the door open.
It seemed she was subconsciously aware of his presence.
Eventually, the sound of running water ceased, and Marcelo quickly exited the bathroom.
Renee instinctively shut her eyes as the quilt was lifted and a warm, damp body slid in beside her.
Marcelo wrapped his arm around her waist, attempting to draw her close.
But Renee, almost reflexively, resisted his embrace.
“Are you awake?” He asked in surprise.
Why wasn’t Renee speaking to him, given she was awake?
Marcelo instinctively propped himself up on one elbow, turning his gaze towards Renee.
“You woke me up.” Half of her face disappeared into the folds of the quilt as she spoke in a muffled voice, tinged with a subtle hint of distance. “I’m feeling tired. I’m going to sleep.”
Marcelo noticed something was off and gently brushed her hair away from her face.
“Did you get bullied in the Hudson’s house?” Marcelo asked, his first suspicion.
“I’m sleepy, Marcelo. “Renee had no interest in talking to him at the moment.
Revealing her feelings wasn’t Renee’s style. When she wanted to keep her true emotions hidden, she could effortlessly fool others. Unfortunately, she was dealing with Marcelo.”

Marcelo sensed her bad mood, like she had locked herself in a tiny room, refusing to step out or invite anyone in. “But I’m wide awake.” Taking her hand, Marcelo guided her to his side, keeping a close eye on her emotions. “What should we do, Mrs. King?”
Renee’s hand jerked away as if shocked by electricity. She sat up abruptly and moved back.
Positioned away from the light, her eyes hid any signs of resistance and defensiveness, making it impossible for anyone to discern.
But her body language clearly showed her oppositions
“What’s the matter with you?“Marcelo frowned.
Renee also realized that she overreacted.
She didn’t want to create an awkward situation between them.
“You smell like something I don’t like. You have the scent of a strange perfume on you.”
Actually, Renee didn’t detect any smell at all. It was just that a sense of disgust washed over her when she recalled Vivian sitting beside him, wearing his jacket.
Marcelo sniffed himself and assured her, “I don’t have any strange smell. I’ve just had a shower.”
Renee remained in the same position, frozen in place. Though Marcelo couldn’t see her face, he could sense that her gaze remained fixed and unmoving.

It was as if she insisted, “You have the scent of a strange perfume on you.”
“I was out with friends tonight and might have picked up the scent.”
Suspecting that Renee might have faced some trouble at the Hudson’s house,Marcelo tried to comfort her with a gentle tone.” Well then, I’ll go take another shower.”
Then, he got up from the bed.
After taking a few steps, Marcelo noticed Renee’s continued tension. He wondered if he had scared her earlier.
