Liam’s heart plummeted. Staring into Soren's dark, mocking eyes, he was almost certain that Soren's words were a direct warning to him.
After days of these veiled threats, he couldn't take it anymore. He rushed forward and dropped to his knees before Soren's bed.
“Soren, I know I was wrong! I shouldn’t have said those awful things to Evangeline. I’ll never do it again, I swear. Please, forgive me.”
“Everything I did back then… it was just to get her to leave on her own, so you and Poppy could be together without any trouble.”
Liam didn't know how much Soren knew, but he instinctively kept the fake pregnancy a secret. It was clear that Evangeline and Soren were over. The role of Mrs. Fawkes would likely go to Poppy in the end, and he couldn’t afford to cross her. Besides, he was complicit. Betraying Poppy would mean betraying himself, and he’d be caught in the middle with no one on his side. Liam gritted his teeth and took the gamble.
To his relief, Soren seemed genuinely unaware. He glanced down at Liam, not with anger, but with a gentle tone. “What are you doing?”
He let out a low chuckle. “I’m not going to hold a grudge over something from years ago.”
Soren was a man of his word, but for some reason, Liam’s heart still pounded with fear. If Soren wasn't settling the score for past events, did that mean he would settle it for current ones?
As if reading his mind, Soren continued, “Someone within the Fawkes family conspired with the Lockridges. My being attacked was related to their collusion.”
“Who do you think it was?”
Soren hadn't told anyone he had taken the bullet for Evangeline, so Liam was unaware of the full story. Hearing this, he was stunned.
