Lance's eyes lit up. "Anything?"
"Yeah," Theresa nodded.
Regardless of the circumstances, Lance was in the trenches with her now.
She had originally planned to return to Serenity City completely alone, but Lance had been worried sick and insisted on acting as her bodyguard. Unable to shake him off, she had finally let him tag along.
Given how dire things had gotten, he deserved to know a few truths.
Theresa figured he would ask why someone was mobilizing a small army to hunt her down, if her life was in danger, or what their chances of escaping were.
Instead, Lance hesitated, shuffling awkwardly before blurting, "Isn't Victor your fiancé? Why are you hiding from him like this?"
"Fiancé?" Theresa blinked in utter shock. "Who on earth told you he was my fiancé?"
Hearing her sharp denial, Lance's eyes brightened, quickly followed by confusion.
He distinctly remembered Soren saying that Theresa's fiancé was Victor.
He had mentally repeated the name hundreds of times; there was no way he remembered it wrong.
When Theresa had initially arranged for him to get close to Victor, he had double-checked multiple times, and Victor himself had mentioned her name several times.
But the sheer disgust on Theresa's face wasn't faked.
"He isn't?" Lance asked, bewildered.
A deep revulsion filled her eyes. "How could he ever be my fiancé? The man I was going to marry was gentle, kind, and resilient. That man killed him. He's my worst enemy."
Lance froze.
He saw the profound grief welling up in her eyes, the glistening tears of ancient, agonized memories clawing their way to the surface.
"I... I'm so sorry," he stammered.
Theresa shook her head.
She let out a hollow laugh. "It's all in the past."
She knew Finn was right. Victor was dangerously paranoid. Even if she managed to get close to him, taking revenge for Jason was a near-impossible feat.
During the time she was held captive, she had tried to end him, but every single attempt had failed.
Worse still, Victor had a sadistic, methodical talent for psychological torture. Every time an assassination attempt failed, he retaliated by systematically destroying the few remaining possessions Jason had left behind—the things she guarded with her life.
His old bedroom, his personal belongings, even the little stray dog he had rescued...
