Alicia stared at Jade, maintaining a long, heavy silence.
Jade knew full well that Alicia couldn't possibly trust her. But Alicia was backed into a corner; without her, reopening the lines of communication with Heath was impossible.
Alicia would be completely paralyzed in this negotiation.
"Alicia, you don't have any other options regarding Heath. Take a chance and trust me this once. I won't let you down. At the very least... not on this," Jade pleaded, her voice trembling slightly. Her arrogant facade was entirely stripped away.
She truly had no pride left to cling to.
If Alicia refused to trust her, she was entirely out of options.
"There's no downside for you here. I don't need a position at White Corporation. You just... need to let me accompany you to see Heath. I can get his wife to show up," Jade continued desperately.
Heath's only weakness was his wife. As an illegitimate child whose mother had been duped by a scumbag, Heath despised infidelity and cherished his wife above all else. He catered to her every whim. If Jade could convince Mrs. Chamberlain to attend the meeting, their chances of success would skyrocket.
"And what exactly is your endgame here? You're a mercenary, Jade. I don't buy this sudden angelic redemption arc if there's no profit involved," Alicia said bluntly, refusing to believe Jade was helping out of the goodness of her heart.
Jade looked as if she had been slapped. She lowered her eyes, remaining silent for a moment before speaking. "Brandon and The Gentleman won't let me live. If I'm useless, no one will protect me. Clayton hates me, so I can't rely on him. Alicia... I need you to be my shield."
Alicia nodded slowly.
She actually appreciated Jade's brutal honesty.
A person never truly understands their own will to survive until they are pushed to the absolute brink.
"Alright. I'll trust you this once," Alicia agreed.
Jade stared at her in shock. She had fully expected Alicia to humiliate her or make things difficult.
But Alicia did no such thing.
"Relax. Heath is actually a decent guy. He's got a strong moral compass," Micah assured her.
Alicia nodded. "You didn't tell him I was the one you were meeting tonight, did you?"
She guessed that if Heath had known she was the VIP, he would have canceled immediately.
"I told him I had a prospective fiancée and wanted him to vet her for me," Micah replied with a faint smile.
Alicia fell silent, offering no response.
No wonder Heath had agreed to come so readily.
Taking a deep breath, Alicia wondered just how much poison Brandon—a masterful manipulator—had poured into Heath's ears about her.
But according to her intel, Heath despised malicious people. If he considered Brandon a brother, then in his eyes, Alicia was undoubtedly the absolute villain of the story.
