The old man laughed and chatted with a few longtime friends, the lines at the corners of his eyes deepening with every smile. Brandon’s own grin was barely contained, his excitement threatening to spill over.
After years of scheming, waiting, and calculating, today was finally the day they’d been working toward.
Brandon’s mind was already running ahead—if the old man officially named Nicole as the heir tonight, he could finally get rid of the stubborn old bastard before the day was out.
“Dad, Grandpa invited a ton of people,” Jade murmured, lips curling into a sly smile. “He’s really going all out, isn’t he?”
Brandon snorted, bitterness lacing his tone. “That old man only ever acknowledged his precious son, and naturally, only ever saw Nicole as his real granddaughter. Too bad he never realized Nicole’s long dead. The girl standing here now is nothing more than a puppet for us—her father and daughter—to use for our own ends.”
Jade’s face lit up with smug satisfaction, her laughter as sharp as broken glass.
“Mr. White, are you planning to announce the White family’s new successor today?” someone from the crowd called out.
“What do you think of Miss Nicole, sir?” another reporter pressed, shoving a recorder forward.
The old man simply smiled, refusing to answer as the questions kept coming.
Clayton led Nicole over, positioning himself beside the old man like a bodyguard, his gaze constantly scanning the crowd for any sign of trouble.
Today, the old man and Clayton had made sure every detail was covered.
Nicole, practically bubbling with excitement, forced herself to look demure as she slipped up to the old man’s side. “Grandpa…”
Jade stood with Brandon, watching the flashbulbs pop as reporters jostled for a better shot.
“Sir, you’re clearly favoring Miss Nicole over Jade,” a bolder journalist called out, voice amplified over the chatter. “Are you saying you don’t see Jade as your granddaughter at all?”
Jade’s expression darkened instantly, the smile wiped clean from her face.
Her dream was about to come true; she’d finally become the true heiress.
“I’ve already drafted my will and had everything notarized,” the old man continued. “All shares in White Corporation will temporarily be held in trust by Clayton, until Nicole is ready to manage things on her own. Everything belongs to my one true granddaughter, Nicole.” As he spoke, his gaze flickered for a moment to Alicia, who lingered at the edge of the crowd, silently observing the spectacle.
As soon as the announcement was made, the expressions on Brandon, Jade, and Nicole’s faces all soured.
Why should Clayton hold the shares?
“Dad! Why let Clayton control everything? He’s not even family—” Brandon almost lost his temper, but caught himself at the last moment.
He took a slow, steadying breath, forcing a smile. “Alright, Dad. I was out of line. Whatever you decide, I’ll respect it.”
But the bitterness in his voice was unmistakable, and as he spoke, his mind was already plotting the best time to get rid of Clayton once and for all.
