Cary and Will exchanged a wary look. The news of the charity gala had barely broken, yet the formal invitation was already sitting on the desk. Sebastian was clearly moving with calculated speed.
Cary picked up the gold-embossed card, scanned it briefly, and dismissed the butler. "Understood. You may leave."
As soon as the door closed, Will leaned in. "Father, what is he playing at? Was my guess right? Is he actually planning to announce the marriage at the gala?"
Cary’s brow remained tightly furrowed. He was struggling to make sense of Sebastian’s endgame. If the man truly intended to surrender and join their families, why go through the elaborate trouble of hosting a massive, public gala?
Sebastian Whitmore was not a man who compromised easily. This smelled like a trap—a setup designed to lure them into a false sense of security before striking.
"Something isn't right," Cary muttered. "This gala is far too sudden. More importantly, I still cannot reach the heads of those five families. I have no idea what is happening on their end."
Will was visibly shaken. "What? Still no contact? If we can't get a hold of them now, our entire leverage disappears. The plan won't work!"
Cary’s gaze sharpened, his voice dropping to a low hiss. "That is exactly what concerns me. Did they decide to back out? Or... has Sebastian already dealt with them? Otherwise, there is no reason for all of them to vanish simultaneously."
"Impossible," Will insisted. "They wouldn't back out. They were the ones who swore they wouldn't stop until Sebastian was erased from Murica. Why quit at the finish line? As for Sebastian 'dealing' with them, I think the odds are slim. That region is remote and incredibly difficult to penetrate. Taking out five families at once? Unlikely. I suspect something happened that made them change their minds, and now they’re avoiding us."
