Merrick let out a heavy sigh. "You see? This is exactly why I hesitated to tell you. I knew the moment you found out, you’d throw caution to the wind and race over there. We have no idea what the situation is like on the ground. If your sudden arrival disrupts Sebastian’s plans, it could make everything even more complicated."
"Exactly, Lilian. Just give it a little more time," Eric chimed in. "Let me dig up more details first, and then we can plan our next move properly. How about that?"
Lilian shook her head firmly. "No. I have to go myself. I’m done waiting. It’s already been too long; if I delay any further, I’m terrified things will spiral out of control. And I promise you, I won't cause trouble or interfere with his strategy."
Seeing the unwavering resolve in her eyes, Merrick realized there was no stopping her. "Fine," he said with a helpless shrug. "Since you’re so determined, I won't hold you back. But you must promise me one thing: take Eric with you. That’s the only way I’ll have any peace of mind. This old fox Cary is playing for keeps this time, and I’m worried that if he catches wind of your whereabouts, he’ll target you. With Eric there, I’ll feel better. Besides, the Philips family still carries weight in Murica; it’ll be much easier to investigate things once you’re on the ground. It should be of some help to you."
Lilian stepped forward and gave Merrick a gentle hug. "Thank you, Grandfather. Thank you for being so thoughtful."
Merrick sighed again. "Don't talk nonsense. You’re my only granddaughter; of course I’m going to look out for you. Just don't be mad at me. I was worried you’d resent me for keeping Sebastian’s situation from you."
Lilian looked at him and smiled. "You’re my grandfather. How could I ever be angry with you? I know you only kept it a secret because you didn't want me in harm's way. But Grandfather, Sebastian is in a difficult position right now. I can't just turn my back on him. Think of how many times he’s risked everything to save me when I was in danger. Now that he’s the one struggling, how can I just stand by and watch? This time, I want to do everything in my power to help him. I won't let him face that old man alone."
Merrick stroked her hair, his gaze tender. "Alright. Since you’ve made up your mind, I’ll support you. But you must give me your word: do not compromise your own safety. Do you understand?"
"I will. Don't worry, I’ll take care of myself," Lilian promised.
