Callen set the newspaper aside and gave a cold snort. “Do you really think he cares about any marital affection for Renee? In all these years, have you ever seen them show a hint of intimacy? He doesn’t even spare a glance for his own daughter. They’ve both spent years leading separate lives, neither interfering with the other’s business. Do you think I’m blind to that? It’s better to just sever the ties now. Renee is too restless, too reckless. We cannot keep her in the Stint family. If we do, it’s only a matter of time before she brings the entire house down around our ears.”
Meanwhile, at the Westin Hotel.
The presidential suite was shrouded in silence.
Lillian lay quietly on the bed, her eyes tightly closed. She had been cleaned up and changed into fresh clothes. Beside the bed, Sebastian stared at the dark bruising on her abdomen, his eyes flashing with a dangerous, icy light.
If he hadn’t seen it while helping her change, he never would have known she was injured. He was haunted by the fact that she had endured the pain for so long without a word. Guilt gnawed at him–how could he have failed to notice sooner?
A light knock sounded at the bedroom door.
Sebastian carefully adjusted the covers over her and spoke softly. “Enter.”
Foster stepped inside with muffled footsteps. “Sir, Mr. Fawks has arrived.”
A chilling glint surfaced in Sebastian’s eyes. “Understood.” He tucked the blanket in one last time before standing up and walking
out.
Fawks was waiting in the lounge. As Sebastian emerged, he asked with a grave expression, “How is Lillian? And what’s the situation with Leonard? Dracovia is taking this extremely seriously. They want a full investigation and an update immediately.”
Sebastian sat on the sofa in the seating area, his brow furrowed. “Lillian will be fine, but Leonard’s condition is far more concerning. He took a bullet meant for her. He’s currently unconscious.”
“That serious?” Fawks was visibly shocked. “Where is he now? Should we arrange to have him sent back home? We have our own medical experts there who could oversee his care.”
Sebastian’s dark eyes narrowed. “That won’t be necessary. I’ve already had Leonard secretly transported back; he’s under the care of specialized staff. He spent years in seclusion because he had no desire to be in the public eye. Once he recovers, I’ll respect his wishes. If he wants to return to Kingston, I’ll arrange it. If he prefers his old life, I’ll see him back to Wyvern Hill.”
Fawks nodded thoughtfully. “Fair enough. But you should know that Mr. Geo and the others are very invested in this. Leonard’s reputation in Dracovia is legendary, and they are deeply concerned. However, your reasoning makes sense. I’ll explain the situation to the elders. On another note, we’ve successfully pressured Radovia. George has been taken into custody.”
Sebastian’s gaze was lethal. “Then he’s lucky. I was hoping that if the law didn’t get him, I’d have another chance to teach him a lesson myself.” The mere thought of Lillian’s injuries made him want to tear the man apart.
