Sebastian’s pen moved across the document in a fluid, practiced motion as he signed his name. He tossed the file onto the desk and said coldly, “All is fair in war. If he lacks the wit to see through the ruse, he has no one to blame but himself. He can consider this his own bad luck.”

Just then, a knock sounded at the door.

Foster entered the room. “Arlo has arrived.”

Sebastian’s lips curled into a chilling smile. “He certainly moved fast. Since he’s here, show him in.”

A moment later, Arlo entered, followed by Stellan.

Sebastian looked at his visitors, his expression distant and cold. “To what do I owe the pleasure of a visit. from the head of the Mildew family?”

Arlo fixed a sharp, piercing gaze on the man before him. “Mr. Whitmore, why play dumb? My presence here is exactly what you expected.”

“You flatter me,” Sebastian replied smoothly. “Forgive my ignorance, but I truly have no idea what you are implying. After our conversation at your estate yesterday, I assumed everything that needed to be said was settled. Is there something else you wish to discuss?”

Arlo studied Sebastian’s composed demeanor, momentarily uncertain.

Stellan, unable to restrain himself, blurted out, “We are here to ask if you are the one who took and daughter.”

Sebastian let out a short, dry laugh. “What a peculiar accusation. Why would I take your family? We have no personal grievances. Perhaps you should search your estate more thoroughly. It’s possible they simply lost track of time while out and forgot to return home.”

If Arlo had any lingering doubts before, they vanished the moment Sebastian spoke. He was now a hundred percent certain that this man was behind the disappearances. Sebastian’s words were a near- perfect echo of the excuses George had used to dismiss him the day before.

“If it wasn’t you, then who?” Stellan demanded. “No one in Radovia dares to cross the Mildew family. You suspect George kidnapped your fiancée, so you retaliated by taking our people. I didn’t expect the Chairman of the Empire Group to stoop to such low, underhanded tactics as targeting women and children.”

Sebastian’s eyes flashed with mockery. “Careful with your words. Without evidence, that sounds a lot like defamation. Besides, isn’t the Mildew family famous for such underhanded tactics? You used them twenty years ago, and you are using them again today. It seems to be a tradition you find quite effective.”

“See? You just admitted it!” Stellan glared at him. “You did kidnap them.”

Sebastian’s lips curved into a lazy, dangerous smile. “Admitted what? I don’t follow. If you want a confession, bring me proof. Without evidence, I admit to nothing.”
