Morten pulled his hand back his voice trembling with rage. “I want the truth. Did you have something to do with Greg’s accident?”

Renee stiffened for a fraction of a second before letting out a cold laugh. “Dad what are you talking about? How could I have anything to do with a car wreck? Besides I haven’t heard a word about him being in an accident. It hasn’t even been on the news.”

“Keep lying. Go ahead” Morten snapped. “The public might not know but word has already spread throug! our circles. You’ve been talking about your plan for years and you rushed out of here looking frantic the morning it happened. Who else could it be?”

If he hadn’t been catching up with old friends today he never would have guessed that Renee had already targeted the Whitmores let alone Greg. He knew his daughter wanted revenge on Derrick and the rest of that family but he never expected her to start with Greg. Even though the two families no longer spoke attacking a defenseless old man was pathetic. Greg had been his comrade in arms after all.

Seeing the fury on his face Renee sneered. “Dad the Whitmores treated us like dirt. They cut all ties with the Lindts years ago. Are you really still worried about your dear old friend?”

“Stop the bullshit” Morten barked. “I am asking you one last time. Was it you?”

Renee’s lips curled into a chilling smile. “Yeah it was me. What are you going to do? Go to the Whitmores and turn me in?” Everything was out in the open now and she didn’t care. She knew he wouldn’t actually rat out his own daughter.

Morten looked horrified. Even though he had suspected as much hearing her admit it was a different kind of blow. “Why? Why him? Is your target really everyone in that family and not just Derrick?”

“Is there a difference?” Renee asked coldly. “I told you. Everyone who watched me get humiliated all those years ago is going to pay. Greg might not have done it himself but Derrick is his son. A father is responsible for his son’s failures. I had to use him to start the game.”

Morten stared at his daughter with genuine fear. “Start the game? What is the goal here?”

Renee walked over to the sofa with practiced elegance and sat down. She poured herself a glass of water and remained perfectly calm. “To Jure Derrick back home obviously. I have spent years planning this. I have set the stage and the show can’t start without the lead actor.”

“You are that sure he will come back just because Greg is hurt?” Morten moved to sit across from her.

Renee gave him a mocking look. “Of course Lalready sent the word. He knows exactly what happened to his father and I would bet he is already on his way back. They might have cut ties but Derrick was always the loyal son. He won’t be able to ignore this. So just wait. Soon enough everyone in Kingston will know

that Derrick is back.”

Morten looked at his daughter and felt a wave of helplessness. This was the girl he had raised and pampered. Now looking at her he felt nothing but disappointment and a growing sense of dread.
