Lilian didn’t even look up from the equipment in her hand. “Relax. Noah is a total pushover. If you just corner him and turn on the waterworks, he’ll definitely let it slide.”
Isabelle shot her a frustrated look. “Easy for you to say. He only has a soft spot for geniuses like you. To him, I’m just a constant headache. Seriously, I don’t know how your brain works. You ditch class half the time and still nail every experiment. Were you some world–class surgeon in a past life who just happened to keep all your memories?”
Lilian gave her a playful shove. “Alright, stop with the crazy theories and use that energy to study. We have that pathology exam in a few days.” She spoke while pulling off her white lab coat.
Isabelle looked even more depressed. “Let them fail me. I’m already numb to it.”
Lilian shouldered her backpack. “Fine, stay here and mope. I’m going to get lunch. After spending all morning cutting through tissue. I’m actually starving.” She turned and headed out the door.
Isabelle made a face and hurried after her. “That is so disgusting.”
When they reached the cafetería, they found a massive crowd blocking the entrance. People were cheering and chanting, “Say yes! Say yes!”
in the middle of the huddle, a guy was down on one knee with a bouquet of flowers. Standing in front of him was a stunning girl with wavy hair, wearing a white skirt and an off–the–shoulder blue sweater. She looked incredible.
“What’s the deal?” Lilian asked, confused.
sabelle was already leaning in to get a better look. “You don’t know? This guy’s a junior. The girl is a sophomore. He’s been asking her out or proposing like this every other week for a year now. She hasn’t given in once. I heard about it from some of the other girls.”
Lilian was genuinely surprised. “That’s some serious persistence, I’ll give him credit for not quitting.”
Isabelle laughed. “Well, they say if you keep at it long enough, you can wear anyone down.”
“Maybe if there’s actually something there. If she’s not interested, he’s just wasting his time,” a sharp voice cut in.
The two girls turned to see Elsie standing there with her arms crossed, watching the scene with a skeptical look.
“How do you know he’s wasting his time?” Isabelle asked.
Elsie gave her a look like the answer was obvious. “It’s been a year. If she liked him, she would’ve said yes ages ago. She wouldn’t still be standing here letting him make a scene in public.”
Isabelle smirked and nudged her. “You sound like such an expert. Do you ever get this sentimental with Cameron?”
“Of course,” Elsie said without missing a beat. “Look, I know guys are supposed to be the ones to step up, but sometimes a woman needs to take charge too. Telling the person you love how you feel. It keeps things fresh and makes them feel secure. Every time I say something sweet to Cameron, he’s so happy he can’t even sleep.”
Lilian went quiet, looking thoughtful as she let that sink in.
