So, seeing her attitude now, Elder Mrs. Lancaster wasn’t a bit surprised. Instead, she was furious on Anastasia’s behalf. “How can any father act like that? Even now, he shows no concern for you, only for that illegitimate daughter!”
Worried the old woman would get too worked up, Anastasia quickly soothed her. “It’s alright, Grandma. I don’t care about them. Having you all is more than enough for me.”
She had truly moved on. If she let Gabriel get to her, she would have died of anger countless times over.
As they were talking, the servant returned.
“That Mr. Sterling says he has something very important to tell you about your birth.”
Her birth?
Anastasia frowned.
What could be wrong with her birth?
She didn’t understand what Gabriel was up to, but she had a gut feeling that this wasn’t just a random lie to lure her outside.
After a moment’s thought, she went out.
Seeing them, she asked directly, “What do you have to tell me?”
Before they could speak, she added, “If this is about pleading for Queena, don’t bother. It’s not up for discussion.”
A flash of hatred crossed Nora’s eyes. She stared at Anastasia. “What will it take for you to let Queena go? Do you want me to kneel for you?!”
Anastasia laughed mockingly. “You think your knees are that valuable?”
Even Nora looked at Gabriel in confusion, clearly not understanding what he meant.
“What do I mean?” Gabriel looked at her, his expression a mixture of wretchedness and ferocity. “Didn’t your mother ever tell you before she died? You’re not my daughter at all. She was already pregnant before she married me. You’re just a bastard from God knows where!”
A buzzing filled Anastasia’s mind, making it impossible to think.
Having finally revealed the secret he’d kept for years, Gabriel couldn’t stop the torrent of emotions.
“Haven’t I been good enough to you all these years? Raising a bastard like you was an act of immense charity on my part! What right do you have to compare yourself to Queena?!”
Amid Gabriel’s insults and disdain, Anastasia’s mind suddenly cleared.
