The next morning, when Valerie woke up, Aiden was already gone,

After getting up and freshening up, Valerie picked up yoga again, a practice she’d neglected for ages.

After practicing for a while, Valerie got a call from the property management.

Valerie’s new apartment was ready. When she went to inspect it, the property manager, Charlie Cox, was beaming the whole time, as if he wers welcoming his long–lost mother, Valerie felt so uncomfortable that she couldn’t wait to leave.

Aiden seemed busy today. After Valerie finished handling the apartment matters, she sent him a message on WhatsApp. [Have you eaten? I’m near your office.]

There was no reply.

Valerie didn’t think much of it. She just picked a random spot to grab a bite, but as soon as she finished, an message popped up on her phone, from an

unknown number.

The message was a photo. Aiden, tall and long–legged, stood in a bustling airport terminal. Behind him, people hurried by with suitcases or sunglasses. At his side was a sweet–faced, long–haired beauty, her smile brimming with adoration as she gazed at him.

The first thing that flashed through Valerie’s mind was the text message from last night.

She checked the time, it was just past two. The timing was perfect.

Valerie pursed her lips, her knuckles whitening as she gripped the phone. She deliberately zoomed in on the girl in the photo for a closer look.

Valerie thought, ‘She really is beautiful.

‘She’s got such a sweet look.

‘In Reano City, the Walker family is widely recognized as the most prominent. Three other famil, the Hall family, the Skinner family, and the Stokes family, stand on equal footing with them, their wealth and family background rivaling the Walker family.

Just then, Valerie’s phone buzzed with a new message from Aiden.

Aiden finally replied to her message. [Not at the office. Go ahead and eat.]

Valerie thought, ‘So you’re not at the office, you’re at the airport, right?‘

Anger surging, Valerie hammered out a furious message. But before she could send it, she deleted every word, locked her phone with a sharp exhale, and tossed it into her bag.

Valerie thought to herself, ‘Just one text from Sydney last night, and today Aiden’s already at the airport picking her up. He couldn’t even be bothered to reply to my message… What a gentleman.’

Early that morning, Aiden received a text from Lennox. [Boss, we’ve found some leads on the mastermind behind the attack on Mrs. Walker in Endver City.]

The target was a ghost. Lennox exhausted every lead without success, until he finally uncovered the faintest digital trace on an obscure dark web forum.

Seeing this, Aiden narrowed his eyes slightly. “Got it.”

The person they found was no ordinary figure. Just as they were closing in on the truth, the trail was abruptly cut off.

The only information they had was that this person possessed considerable status and ability, at least on par with Aiden himself.

On learning the result, Aiden’s first thought was of Waylon.

Aiden thought, ;Waylon has always been ruthless. For someone like him, it wouldn’t be surprising if he was behind something like this.

‘Does Waylon really have to go this far?‘

Just then, they pinpointed the mastermind.

The trail lead back to Endver City.

Lennox tracked down Mandy Moore, the one who’d been badly injured protecting Valerie that day. Mandy told him, “Whoever was after Valerie wasn’t just trying to scare her. Every shot was meant to kill. If I hadn’t had professional training and been a step ahead of them, Valerie wouldn’t have made it

out alive.”

A heavy weight settled in Aiden’s chest.

He thought, ‘Valerie was attacked in Endver City, but since she returned to Reano City, there’s been no sign of trouble. Are they just biding their time, trying to lull us into complacency? Or is it simply because she’s no longer a threat to them?”

Lost in thought, Aiden was interrupted by another knock at the door. Lennox had returned.

Lennox said, “Boss, Mr. Wise’s flight will arrive in Reano City in about an hour. It’s time to go.”

Connor Wise wasn’t just the most renowned wedding designer from Nimbrale, he also controlled most of the country’s textile factories and was Aiden’s new business partner. Although the deal amount wasn’t substantial, Aiden had other motives.

‘A proper wedding for Valerie, that’s what I still owe her,‘ Aiden thought,

Aiden’s expression softened a little. “Okay.”

Lennox understood that Aiden was demonstrating his sincerity, hoping to persuade Connor to come out of retirement.

After all, Connor had already retired from the front lines and rarely took on projects personally anymore.

At the airport, while waiting for Connor, Aiden suddenly heard someone call out to him in a sweet, surprised voice, “Aiden?”

Aiden vaguely recognized the voice. Turning around, he saw Sydney dashing toward him, her soft hair cascading over her shoulders as she wheeled her suitcase.

Her every step and smile radiated sweetness and joy. Reaching out eagerly to grab his arm, she asked, “Are you here to pick me up?”

Aiden’s brows furrowed slightly as he avoided her touch. “No. Don’t flatter yourself.”

Lennox paused in silence, his gaze lingering on Sydney.

Lennox knew her. She had been Aiden’s college sweetheart, their whirlwind campus romance all too brief. But how it truly ended remained a mystery known only to Aiden and Sydney themselves.

Sydney was momentarily stunned by his bluntness, yet her smile only widened as she chirped, “I texted you last night. I thought you came here specially to pick me up.”
