Tears streamed down Valerie’s face as she desperately grasped the empty air, finding nothing but crushing despair.
Valerie felt she had been drifting in a cold and endless despair for what seemed like an eternity. Gradually, warmth began to seep in until a surge of blazing heat broke through and embraced her tightly.
“Don’t be afraid. I’m here.” That voice was like a beam of light, suddenly filling up her world. It was so bright, so warm.
Valerie opened her eyes and instantly saw the familiar face. The man who had brought her endless pain and despair in her previous life was now gently holding her hand against his cheek, softly telling her not to be afraid, for he was around..
Valerie was tremendously touched, and tears rolled down her face as she looked at him. She flung herself into his arms, her body trembling slightly.
Aiden’s heart clenched as he pulled Valerie into his arms, his eyes full of tenderness. “Don’t be afraid. I’m here,” he murmured.
Valerie felt a sudden wave of emotion and began to sob aggrievedly. But then, she suddenly remembered Mandy. “Where’s Mandy?” she asked.
Aiden gently stroked her hair and reassured her, “She’s fine.”
“She lost so much blood, so, so much,” Valerie gasped and said, the horrific memory sending chills through her. “Where is she? I want to see her now!”
The bullet on Mandy’s back was stuck between two ribs and was not life–threatening. However, she looked pale due to excessive blood loss.
Seeing Valerie approaching, she tried to sit up, only to be gently pressed back down by Valerie.
Aiden stood by the hospital bed as Mandy spoke up, her voice tinged with guilt. “Sir, I’m sorry. I failed to assess the surroundings and implement proper security measures.”
Aiden’s expression remained calm. “It’s not your fault,” he said. “Any idea who was behind it?”
Mandy had no idea, but she quickly described the enemy’s setup and plan at the scene, then speculated, “It’s likely hiring a professional mercenary group. It’s costly, and only a handful can afford it.”
Valerie’s heart tightened with worry. Although she was not sociable, she got along with people well. She could not figure out who on earth hated her so deeply and wanted her to die.
Suddenly, Juliette came to Valerie’s mind again. ‘In my previous life, Juliette pushed me down the stairs, killing both me and my unborn child.
‘But why did Juliette hate me so much? Where did all her hatred come from?‘ Valerie wondered, unable to understand how a friend for so many years
would want her to die.
Noticing her distraction and assuming she was frightened, Aiden reached out his long arms, pulled her into an embrace thoroughly. Don’t be afraid.”
aid softly, “I will investigate
Soon, Aiden took Valerie out for a meal. However, Valerie could barely eat. She only took a small bite before putting down her cutlery and asked, “When did you get here?”
Aiden gently patted her head and said, “I took the morning flight. I got a call from Kent as soon as I landed.” Kent was Valerie’s driver, a retired military
veteran.
Valerie understood now. After eating, she soon felt sleepy. She collapsed onto the hospital bed and fell asleep.
Aiden gazed at her sleeping face, his eyes gradually darkening. When he stepped out, Lennox had arranged everything.
Two bodyguards were stationed at the door, and a female bodyguard was assigned to stay in Velerie’s room.

Chapter 182
Lennox held the documents, adjusted his glasses, and said, “We managed to trace the leads, but not the mastermind, as if someone deliberately covered their tracks. All suspects are in custody now, awaiting your orders.”
“Yeah,” Aiden responded, his cold aura was hard to suppress. “In Endver City, who has the means to pull this off?”
Lennox fell silent for a moment, then quickly narrowed it down. Less than a minute later, he said, “The Shelton family, the Reed family, the Marlowe family, and the Gregory family.”
Among these families, some were as powerful as the Walker family, while others might not be able to match but still held significant influence in Endver City.
However, for someone harboring such deep hatred toward Valerie and wanting her to die, Aiden could not think of anyone else besides the Shelton family.
Walker instructed, “Invite Juliette out for a ‘chat.”
Juliette, the heiress of the Shelton family, the so–called “best friend” who once set Valerie up, only to end up getting a taste of her own medicine. Lennox nodded.
Meanwhile, at the Shelton family, the night before the assassination attempt on Valerie, Juliette and Russell went their separate ways after their conversation. Back in her room, Juliette lay in bed, tossing and turning restlessly, unable to fall asleep.
‘What should I do now? What should I do? Tomorrow is Colette’s birthday, and Valerie will be there too, Juliette thought.
When she first saw Colette, she did not think much. However, the more she interacted with her, the more she realized her personality and even some of her habits were similar to Valerie’s.
For instance, Valerie’s dietary habits and mannerisms not only resembled Mrs. Shelton’s but also showed similarities to the entire Shelton family.
Valerie’s face looked almost 70 to 80 percent like Colette’s daughter, Russelle’s aunt.
‘What if someone sees Valerie’s face? Will they start relating her to the Shelton family? At that time, will there still be a place for me in the Shelton family?” Juliette thought.
Juliette tossed and turned in bed, anxiety gnawing at her. She felt that she could not just wait for disaster to strike. Just then, her phone suddenly buzzed
with a call from an unknown number.
Juliette glanced at her phone and saw a string of numbers from overseas. ‘They are obviously scam calls,” she thought.
Juliette hung up the calls directly, but the phone rang again, the second time, and the third time.
By the fourth call, Juliette finally snapped. She picked up the call and shouted angrily, “Who the hell is this?”
A low chuckle came from the other end. It was a man’s voice, laced with a hint of allure and malice. “Is it Juliette Scott.
“Juliette Scott,” no one had called her by that name since she returned to the Shelton family. An instinctive revulsion washed over her as she snapped,
“Who the hell are you?”
